Congrats on everyones deer. I'm still deerless this year, though I passed up a chip shot on a forkhorn at 8 yards this morning. With the rut starting to wind up here, I wasn't about to waste a buck tag, plus I just hate shooting small bucks. Been there, done that. We have one more week of archery, then 3 weeks of gun, a couple weeks of muzzleloader, that a week and a half of archery. I'm still confident I'll at least score a doe for our team.

I have passed on several smaller bucks in hopes of the big one... but it is a gamble in NYS. Hope I don't regret it. I am going to take my doe next chance I get.. have passed on a couple of smaller does, looking for the older one I had on my trail cam. Got one quick glimpse of her with her yearling two weeks ago, but I didn't shoot her due to the yearling being with her still.

nice doe congrats i also put my second doe for this year down. i did see one big buck that would have scored good for this contest but not for the books he should have been a main frame 12 his right side has 6 big points but the left side he had his brow tine and then it all clustered together with a bunch of small points i ended up counting 14 points on him but he had to many deductions for me to shot yet. but they are chasing really heavy right now.

were getting some snow today and were supposed to get some more sun. and mon. so hopefully i'll get one in range then anyone else having any luck?

I went out last night at 3:30pm. At 4pm I saw a spike at 125 yards. I grunted a few times, he turned and closed to within 60 yards. I grunted again and he came in to within 15 yards giving me every opportunity. Too bad he wasn't a mature buck. Seems to my going story for this season.

I'm headed to Southern IL for shotgun season Friday-Sunday. I'll be hunting hard. Hopefully I'll finally catch up to a mature buck.

9-pointer

Well Monday night I found an extra hour and decided to give the bow another chance before the shotgun opener Friday.

I called in that darn 9-pointer from October. I wasn't sure at first so I had my Bear TRX pulled and my pin right on the viatls. As I waited for him to stop, which of course he did presenting me a 40 yard broadside shot, I realized he was the same 2.5 year old 9-pointer (at least I'm 90% sure). I had a tough decision. Trying to think of why I should take the shot. For example: he'll got shot next weekend during the opener. I'll never see him next season and so on...

Well, I let the string down and watched him stand there broadside for 1-2 more minutes before leaving. As he left I asked him on a date (same place, same time - next year).:D

Big Buck Down in ILWell boys the good Lord smiled on me last weekend on opening day of the IL shotgun season!:) I took the largest deer I've ever seen on public ground (Shawnee National Forest) after 20 years of hunting. I'll post the story later in the deer hunting forum for anyone interested. He's only an 8-pointer, but mature and heavy! He field dressed at 205 lbs. I shot him at 0715 and it took me all day (4pm) until I finally got him into deer camp. No one was at camp until Friday night so I had to do it myself.I am so sore! Was it worth it? Heck yea it was!;)

Don't give up until the last second of the last day!! Our Connecticut ML season starts here on the 10th - 23rd, then we have another week of bow the 24th - 31st...I don't have any zone 11 or 12 property to hunt so that will be the end of my year....I'm hoping to put down at least 1 or 2 with the ML, and I think I can eek out at least 1 more with the bow before the end of the month, time will tell, but I'm not quitting I can tell ya that!

Count on Iowa~

Just a little bit slow in getting this posted, but we returned from Iowa on Monday, and as always, "it was goooood.

We went down a week ago, Thursday. We were met with much optimism and rumors of "good" deer. During our day 1 scouting, we encountered 7 yotes, however we didn't bring a rifle with us

Day 2 gave us time to catch up with family and play some Wii against the kids (only to make my shoulder sore for the next AM hunt:confused:)

Opening Day: There was not a lot of shooting, nor was the deer movement too remarkable, however I was able to fill a doe tag around 0800 with a nice mature Iowa doe. A few moments later, my dad filled on a nice 1 1/2 year old buck and doe that I had earlier let walk. Great! By 0900 we had half of our tags filled! I talked with my uncle who had seen very few deer~ so we proceeded to a midday hunts in filling the 3 remaining party tags. I moved over to one of my favorite stands, the plumb thicket. After a short series of rattles, I caught movement of a large bodied deer with hardware, coming through the creek bed. As he walked into the opening, he looked greatly disproportionate (in that his body was grossly large compared to his head) Based on his size, I new he was a mature deer, so I shouldered and placed a good shot on him. He went about 70 yards and expired in the field. As I approached him, he continued to strike me as "odd". As I looked at his rack, it appeared to have "good" mass, but wasn't very big. Then it hit me... he was in full velvet!

After a little surveying, I lifted his leg and began to field dress him, where the real suprise was. He had no testes~ everything else... just no kibbles and bits. When we skinned him, we found over an inch of fat acrossed his back, and his meat was bright red... looked like a real steer. I guess that is about what he was.

Sunday brought no deer, but cold~ windy weather.

Monday: Dad closed on two mature does... ending our Iowa season 2 days early!

I will put pics of the license and deer on Sunday... he is a 7 point with a solid 1 inch kicker (8 points) giving us another 12/13 points for our team! :D
