tedicast
This year has been a real tough year for me and my family with my Dads health. Friday, things took a turn for the worse yet again. After spending most of Fri thru Monday at the hospital, I needed a break. I ran home grabbed my gear, and headed out for the first sit of the season. I can't remember the last time I missed the first 3 weeks of archery season! I got in my stand around 3:30. After about 20 minutes, I was antsy as heck. Having trouble sitting still. Feeling selfish, and guilty for being out hunting, when I should be at the Hospital. But, I really needed some treestand meditation. A little break from reality. I finally settled down, and enjoyed my sit. At 6;15, I hear the unmistakeable sound of deer. I grab my bow, hook on my release, just as a huge doe enters me area, coming from my right. She is followed by another doe.The first doe passes me stand at about 6 or 7 yards, and stops at a perfect spot, at a tree I had ranged at 18 yards. The second doe stopped about 5 yards on the other side of me, making it impossible to draw on the first deer. Finally the second deer got past me. I raised my bow, and came to full draw on the first deer, who was still browsing, quartering away at the 18 yard tree. Just as I hit full draw, a 3rd deer that I never saw, that was still behind me spooked. It must have caught me coming to full draw, blowing my shot. I was so dissapointed. I was about 5 seconds away from letting one fly. All in all it was a great way to start the season late. It put me in a much better frame of mind, after a very stressfull, and depressing weekend. Hope to get out Saturday, if possible. But, if I don't, it isn't a big deal. Just wanted to share my almost succesfull hunt.

fly
Great job! That's a nice looking doe from a fellow Fred Bear bowsman. I'm using the older TRX model. I spoke with a farmer last night and secured permission to hunt the corner of another farm just north of the one I hunt currently. He's a super nice guy and owns and rents several large farms. He leases some of the land (for hunting) for a lot of money. The area I have permission to hunt on isn't real big (maybe 20 acres), but no one else hunts it and it will make a nice option for me in case of a north wind. Funniest thing happened to me as I left his farm house late last night. I had my car window down and his black cat crawled into my car. As I was leaving I shut the car door and that things shot out of the back seat, up my neck, over my head, and out the window. I thought I was being attacked. I don't think I've been more surprised in my life. I wound up with several nice scratches on the back of my neck.
ohiobuckhunter
has anyone been out lately? i went out last night and saw 17 2 were bucks one was a decent 2 1/2 year old main frame 8 point with split brows on his left side to make him a 9 point and a nice 11 point but the 11 stayed about 60 yards out and of course the 9 point walks about 3 yards under the stand i could have shot a doe at right about dark but i was hoping that the 11 point would come back around. i'll try again tomorrow
Swamphunter
Went out last evening and thought about adding 5 points to the board, but decided to pass. I watched this old doe and this yearling for the better part of 15 minutes at thirty yards. Played with them a bit with the bleat call, and had some fun, but decided to let them both walk as the yearling was still hanging tight with the doe. I'll give it another week or so and hopefully the doe will be alone.

fly
That's a great picture Ken. Sorry you can't get out until Monday. Including this morning I've had 10 hunts in 20 days. Some only a couple hours, but I was sure expecting to have some meat by now. This morning I saw 2 heavy horned bucks in a uncut bean field as I was driving to my stand around 5:30am. They were only about a 1/2 mile from my stand (would this be the morning)? I thought it might be time to break out the grunt call so I let out some easy grunts at 7am. Seconds later I could see a deer coming. I stood up pulled back my bow and waited for one of those 2 monster bucks to clear the branches. However, the big boys didn't seem to want to play yet. A 1.5 year old 4-point walks to my tree looking all over for the buck that made the grunt. It hung around (within 20 yards) for about 20 minutes. I pulled back a second time (I'm in need of some meat and I had a no miss shot). However, I decided for the second time to let it go. Very fun morning! I'm thinking the next deer that gives me a decent shot is getting an arrow.
Swamphunter
I want to catch that doe alone..if not in two weeks, I think I am going to take her anyways if I still ahven't got a buck down. She should have pushed that yearling off by the time the pre-rut starts....if not...
struttinhoyt
Been out a few times... Seen a goofy lookin 6 point one morning that I wanted to get out of the herd... had him coming stright in to me... reached for my bow and he looks right up at me and turns and walks away.... Went another time and had a 4 point come up and ate berrys at 40 yds for about 25 mins I just kicked back and watched him... and let him walk... I was hoping something else was gonna come in behind him.... by the way he was acting something else was with him... But nothing else showed... Muzzleloader season opens this weekend... But I'll prolly have da Hoyt in hand... that is my girlfriend isn't huntin with me... I'll prolly let her hunt one of my ladder stands... and see about filming.... fly
Dang Joe, take care of yourself. I shot a doe right at dusk tonight. Hit it back a little so I'm giving it overnight. Low is 29F tonight so I don't think it'll be a problem as far as the meat goes. I'm pretty sure I'll find her in a low spot she entered. Pics tomorrow if I recover it. >Frank
CTBowMan
Went out a few times, missed one a week ago Friday, then left town for a week, got out on Sat, and saw a bunch but no shots, same deal yesterday, but I'm seeing where they are coming out of the woods and into the cut corn field...it's just a matter of time! ~ Van
fly
Add 5 more!It has been a tough year for me so far. It took me 13 hunts to get my first deer of the season. I just haven't seen that many deer in October as I have in the past. I'm glad to get some meat for the freezer before gun season. Once gun season hits it can take 2-3 months before getting the deer meat back and it's just not as good. If I harvest any additional deer I'll be grinding them into burger myself. This doe was the only deer I saw Monday night. She came out right before last light and worked her way towards me giving me a 12 yard broadside shot. The shot was a little back so I'm glad I gave her overnight. I went back early in the morning with my 1st grader Frank Jr. He helped me track and find it. It was the first time for him to do this and he had a ball. He especially liked the fact that he missed a couple hours of school.

Swamphunter
Passed on a couple of smaller deer and still holding out. Season is new yet, and I don't want to hurry and fill my tag with a spike and be done. Hope I don't get burnt. I will at least fill my doe tag for 5 points here in the next couple of weeks. CTBowMan
State Land 9 Pt!! Hey everyone, Here is my (Pachaug)State land 9PT I got last night!! He came in at 5:16 pm...I'm not going to lie and say it was a perfect double lung shot, I hit him a little far back, but he was quartering away pretty good, so I caught the top of one lung, the bottom line is that he went down and a buddy and I found him last night about 9:15. After the shot, I saw the arrow sticking out of him, and he ran about 60-70 yards before cutting into the woods, it appeared that he staggered cutting in, so I waited until Sunset, got down, phoned home, and just about an hour after the shot took up the trail, it had gotten to the point to where the drops were getting small so I decided to back out rather than chance pushing the animal. I called a friend, and we went back out about 8:45, to retake up the trail, I had asked him what he thought, he said if we didn't find the deer within a 100 yards we'd back back out and wait until morning...well not even 50 yards from where I had initially stopped we found him piled up! All the time God is good! ~ Van
