RTF
It's not hard to do and can be done at home . It all depends on what type of tan you want to use. I acid pickle all my hides, followed by a soak in Lutan F. This process takes a bit longer and requires some skill.
RWTaxidermy
RTF is right on with this, you cant go wrong with an acid bath and Lutan for flat skins.
huntinsonovagun
Will the hide be soft after using these products? Do you guys have a particular brand of acid you like? Are there any other materials we would need? I'm wanting to drape a deer skin over a coffee table...
RTF
Softness comes from breaking in followed by oiling. The acid I use is oxalic acid. I run my pH between 1 and 2 the lower the better.
HOYTnMUZZYboy
Where would i get these products at? RTF
Where would i get these products at? I would rather not half to order them if possible, can i get them at like a local store or somethin? Thanks again for the help!! Stay away from those so called tanning kits. They are not worth it for someone with no expierence. You might be able to get the acid through a hardware store. It is also used to wash decks and driveways. I buy mine in bulk via eBay. Here is an article on the pickling acid. As far as the tanning agent, you will have to order it. I use Lutan F for all my hides and pelts. Does not cost much and works well with the oxalic acid. shockwave
i`ve used acid tans on quite a few hides over the past 2 years, but if your looking for easy, you can`t go wrong with Krowtan 2000, it comes with complete instructions you can`t mess up.. HOYTnMUZZYboy
Thanks for all the help! I will be tanning 2 already from yesterday and one from last year. I saw on a tv show that they were salting the hides overnight. Do I need to do that aswell? I have never done this b4 but really would like to, Does anyone have any links or anything to doing all the steps? Thanks again!!
RTF
If you go to http://taxidermy.net there are instructions. And yes you must salt the hides prior to pickle.
