Michigan Hunters

So our sometimes questionable DNR has finally implemented a stricter deer managment plan for the U.P. Now I know every one has there own ideas about how they should of done this but what do yall think of there idea setting a antler limit on both deer.

Do yall think it will work? yes or no

OK, my opinion (and I know what opinions are like and yes i know every one has one)

I think they should of done away with the second buck tag and put a 3 pt restriction on the one and for any hunter under a certian age say 18 any buck of any size is legal but for adults...we can be a little more paitent.

And with so many people up here needing deer to subsidize there food budget i dont think too many people will follow the new rule but I hope so

Cadillac area

We recently sold our place near cadillac for the very reason you are talking about. In our area they put out unlimited deer permits in the year 2004-2006. Totally eliminated the great hunting to the point where there were no deer around. As for the antler restriction. It would not of bothered me if there was a no buck tag for a year. I would see spikes and forks and treasured them as 8 points. Never would shoot one but many of the people in the area hunted for food so the antlers did not matter. From 1995-2002 i was guarenteed to see about 10 deer everynight out. I could be patient and take a mature doe. By the year 2005 it was shoot the first thing that got within 25 yards. The way the DNR in Michigan managed the deer heard led me to selling my place and i havent been back since. It didnt help that the dnr did not require a deer to be tagged in. The fact the deer counts were probably off about 100,000 contributes to mis management.

Like you I have an opinion and it goes like this:

Finally the DNR has done SOMETHING to improve things up here and that's good news

If a young hunter or any hunter for that matter wants to shoot a spike or a fork they can just buy the single license, use it on that buck, and then they're done killing bucks for the season. You have a choice. If you want a chance to kill two (older) bucks, buy the combo.

Will it work? I think so - fewer young bucks will be shot because guys will think twice before ending their season by killing a spike or fork.

As far as people following the rules - poachers are going to poach no matter what. And if you need food - shoot some does! They taste pretty good!

Good luck in the Michigan woods this fall...

im not sure what to think about the new restrictions. it is a step in the right direction. also the no baiting law in lower michigan is also good to. maybe things are looking up. but as far as people waiting for bigger more mature deer, those people are a minority in the UP becasue deer hunting is a big part of the food budget plan. im not saying that nobody waits but there are a bunch that dont. now i am almost 18 and have shot two deer that are small (basket rack 8 and 4pt) but that was in the youth hunt. since then its been mature deer for me. Just my 2 cents. at least the DNR are trying to make an effort.
