Strut10
I want to plant a section of powerline on a ridgetop with a fall forage. Something that will sprout rather quickly. The soil is not the greatest and I'm not wishing to start tossing fertilizer (at $800/ton) at it. I can till the ground, so it need not be a no-till. What might work the best?? I just want something green there.
wtnhunt
Wintergrazer rye does extremely well in all types of soils Don, it is a rye grain from pennington. May be a consideration if you can find it, I have to put in a call to pennington tomorrow myself to see how I can get some since none of the pennington dealers around here have it or are willing to order it for me without charging insane freight rates. Wheat might be another consideration, but I think it will require more fertilizer to make it attractive to deer.
rhine16
Marshall's ryegrass would be my #1 choice... Maybe a little oats or wheat mixed in..
Tominator
I agree with rye or maybe some oats. Easy cheap way to fertilize would be to haul a few truckloads of manure up there, since you have to ability to till.
dogdoc
ryegrain or wheat will work just fine--a little rape would also do ok.
