turningcustomcalls
I have two beautiful, precious daughters. There the best girls God has ever created and have there daddy wrapped around there pinky's. My oldest is 6 and I would love nothing more than to hunt with her. However, she is scared of the gun shot. I bought her a really nice pair of ear muffs, but she still won't go. I don't want to pressure her and turn her against it, but I want to go with her so bad. I just got a bow, so that might be a start. How many of you hunt with your daughters and when/how did you start them? Thanks
wtnhunt
How many of you hunt with your daughters and when/how did you start them? Thanks I have 3 daughters. Started taking my oldest daughter with me when she was about 4, took her quite a few times when she was 5 and she has been going as much as she can ever since. Really probably the best advice I can give is to take the kids when the weather conditions are fair and take them where you know you will see deer. A blind is a good option if you have one too. My oldest first hunt where she was the hunter was when she was 8 and she had opportunities but would not ever squeeze the trigger(she had buck fever even though it was does and said she was too shaky and did not want to make a bad shot), she had been shooting my wife's .243 and my muzzleloader with a downcharged load since she was about 7. She killed her first deer at age 9 with my wifes savage model 10 in .243. That year was the first year she was allowed to rifle hunt during the youth hunt weekend, TN changed the age limit for our 2 day youth hunt weekend from allowing 10-16 to allowing 6-16 year olds. Our 7 year old has been out some, but she is really not as into hunting as our oldest.
jbaker
I have an 18 yr old and an 11 yr old. the 18 yr lod is the girly girl who will not have anything to do with it. I tried getting her to go for years with no luck. the 11 yr old is starting to show promise. I took her out last year in early archery without my bow, we sat in a 15 ft buddy stand (that I bought 2 yr earlier for this moment). we watched the deer all morning. she was great. She was so excited when a small six point, I had seen several times before, crossed the creek and meandered around directly under our stand. Now this year, she is full of questions. When does the season start?, am I ging to take her again?, the only question that threw up a red flag was --- are you going to take your bow or gun? she is not real thrilled about the weapons. I figure if she wants to keep going, I'll take her --on her terms, teaching her about management and warm her up and ease her into the kill. it seems to be working out.My best advise is to encourage her and meet her on her terms and ease her into it. Eddie234
don't want to start anything here but I have the best girls on earth. I took my oldest, who is now 17 when she was 11, it was nice weather, sunny and in the 60's she swears she about froze to death and had no interest in going out again. my youngest just turned 11 and I'm trying to talk her into going out this fall, she is my tomboy. like jbaker my 17 year old is a girly girl and into friends and boys , It's nice to be cleaning my pistol when they come to pick her up . Hopefully my youngest will be more interested.
dogdoc
I shot one of my biggest bucks 2 years ago with both my daughters in the tower stand with me. They were 6 and 4 at the time. AFter 15 minutes of hunting I knew we wouldn't see a thing. The little one was sticking her head out of the windows. They were fighting--one dropped DS light on the ground. The other one was shining the flashlight out the window---I decided not to make too big of deal about it and let them have fun. Then with about 15 minutes of shooting light the big boy steps out and we nail him. I saw him fall about 40 yards away but the girls didn't. I let them track him and we had a blast. We started taking pictures and while taking a pic a yote howls closely and both girls ran for the truck as fast as they could. My very favorite deer hunt:
RangerClay
My daughter just LOOOOVES to hunt with me. She too hates the loud boom of a gun so I take my bow. Here is a story of our hunt from last fall. Hopefully this year we can get a deer. http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63799

The longest I have ever had one of my kids in the woods is just short of 3 hours. Most trips are much shorter.
GWSmith
Have you thought about getting the 6yr old involved in target shooting? Possibly a pellet rifle? The fun aspect is great especially if you shoot balloons and in the process you could start teaching weapons safety.

I plan to get one for my 6 year old.
Eddie234
It was a late october afternoon bow hunt, made a ground blind and were only there a couple hours. got to watch some squirrels and other wildlife. Even got a shot at a doe but I missed. All and all she had a good time just never really wanted to go again.
Guest hunter-greg
This is what it took to get my daughter interested Yes, I took a lot of ribbing over a pink .22, but it worked.
turningcustomcalls
Thanks so much guys for your input. I did hear about the Pink Red Ryder guns and actually have one ordered from a friend who owns a hardware store. I will take all your advice into consideration and when we go out I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again
LifeNRA
Mine is nine years old, she is afraid of any guns I have. I will get a 22 to start her off with, maybe even a BB gun. Just a few weeks ago I got her a bow, she loves it! Every time I go out to shoot she wants to come along, I LOVE IT! Ill have her hunting in a few years, cant wait. It would be soooooo cool to be with her when she gets her first!
