Advice on Colorado Elk DIY Hunt

My brother and I are looking to go elk hunting next year in Colorado. It will be archery and most likely the first week (works out best with college). We are honestly not going to be picky and are not looking to shoot a big bull. A small bull or even a cow would be awesome! Just looking for some advice on the best places to hunt that have a higher abundant elk herd and are not accessible by ATV. We will be packing in and camping in the woods for 5-6 days. Also, this will be a any sex tag purchased over the counter.

So, sounds like the flattops wilderness area of the White River National Forest is a place with a lot of elk. This would include units 25,26, and 34 I believe. And I finally found a good website with awesome topo maps. Already found what look to be good spot for hunting in unit 25!!!!

Any thoughts on this area or unit 25?

How's the hunt planning going Russell ?

Archery tags are valid statewide with a few exceptions of selected units.

I can help you out with units 62 65 & 70.

The beginning of Archery season, Sept. 1st, most elk are still in the High Country and take some climbing to get to. Not Dangerous climbing, just physically demanding.

You'll be in alot of country that looks like this.

IDH,

There are many good locations to archery hunt elk in Colorado. I can recomend a couple of good starter locations on the Grand Mesa in units 411 and 421. The spot in 411 would be a 5 mile walk in. 421 would be a long atv ride, Both spots hold elk season long. It is a common misconception that you must hunt high to find them. Anywhere oakbrush and above will be good. If you are looking for a wilderness area experience and have good legs and lungs then I could point you to a couple of spots in unit 53 in the West Elk Wilderness. The elk are bugling pretty good now and I can hear them outside my bedroom window at an elevation of 6000'.

It is going....really have been looking into the Flatt tops wilderness are in units 34,25,26. Going to hike in deep......that is half the fun right? Getting out in the middle of nowwhere for 8 days.

One thing I need to look into is in the 2008 regulations it says there is unlimited anysex elk archery tags for all units except (lists the ones where it is limited tags) 25 is not included, meaning is is unlimited. But when I look at the list of elk archery units 25 is not there.

Any ideas on that? I am waiting for a reply from a DOW officer to see that the unit is open OTC archery elk.

You're good in 25, but by all means don't slip into 23,24 or 33 or you'll be "not so good".

OTC archery is available for unit 25. Get yourself some good topo maps and some public land maps. I'm assuming that you'll be hunting public land. In Colorado it is not law that private land needs to be posted. It's up to YOU to know where you're at, ranchers and landowners are NOT fond of trespassers so make sure you know where you're at. The good news is that there is alot of public land in that area.

Yeah, got to check out some BLM maps (they show the public land versus private I believe) and then topo maps.

jjl7913 do you think one of the three units you mentioned would be better hunting? We are looking for the most abundance of elk, by no means no trophy bulls. That is why I chose the flatt top wilderness area....heard there was an abundance of elk.

One thing I have not been able to figure out is wether or not unit 25 has ATV trails going through the public land. Any idea? The only thing I read was that unit 25 was good because it requires horseback or walking to get anywhere. So kinda assuming no ATV allowed but not sure.

I apologize for it taking a while to respond.

I had the same problem with the DOW's book, it's written in Chinese for my brain. Here's the scooby..... dooby. Page 26.........Archery tags are valid statewide except for units 1-2-4-5-7.........etc. Page 27 .............Archery licenses seasons are given for those seasons that are listed on page 26.......1-2-4-5-7......etc. Hope that explains it...........confused me as well at first.

Archery season is always good in Colorado. I would definately limit my use of an atv. The elk are used to them, but, they definately know who's on them. The more stealth the better. Unit 25 will be fine. Patience is the key.........you're not hunting a game preserve........these are wild elk and contrary to popular belief, they're not everywhere.

Do your homework..........Study the area you're hunting by maps and satellite, Google Earth and weather.com maps will give you a pretty good start.

Elk are big animals and they don't like being hot. So pay close attention to the weather while you're hunting. Cool shade on warm days..........warm sun on cool days.
