wildside
Any recommendations on a disc cultivator for a 4-wheeler ATV which will be used in low-lying areas with lots of swamp grass? Thanks!
Tominator
I think the general problem with ATV discs is that they're not heavy enough. I'd kill off the grass with roundup first, that should help with whatever disc you end up going with.
sskybnd
i bought the ground hog this year i was impressed with it, it worked great, fits real close to the back of the atv and plows great, the only problume we had with it was if you want to go deeper you have to drive the atv on somthing to lift it up some to lower the disc, but you could easily plow 6 to 8 inches. Strut10
Dunno. I commented to the Mrs. that if I had to do the plot I just put in with an ATV, I may as well have spit into the wind. The disc I used (after I turned the ground with a 3x16" plow) weighed a good deal more than the largest of ATVs. It ended up being marginal for the job. I think the ATV stuff might work O.K. in sandy, southern soils. Buy I guarantee they are worthless in less-than-perfect conditions.

I use an 8 foot jd wheel disc, it is pretty heavy. King Kutter makes discs for atv's. If I just had to have one for an atv, would probably go with the king kutter, think they are built a little heavier.
craig mack
Make sure that your ATV has enough power for the job before you buy a disc. I bought mine from Cabelas and it works well for us. We had to weight it down the first year we did our plot but we dont have to anymore. Also my ATV is a 400cc and I think it is under powered for this type of work, so might want something bigger than that.
dogdoc
I've created quite a few plots with an ATV but you have to pick the areas. Prep work is important--you need to spray and mow the grass down short and wait for some moisture.

FSU_Seminole
Here are 2 plows you can buy from BPS. I bought the one at the top back in 2004. It was 799 or something like that. The plow works great, but caution. Like many here have said the disc isn't heavy enough if you are planning to plow hard compacted soil. If you plan on discing a cut corn field where the stalks are pretty high, FORGET IT. The most effective way I've found to use my disc is pretty simple. Add 1 or 2 bags of fertilizer and disc shortly after a good soaking rain. Don't try to disc with one of these if you haven't had any rain & the soil is really hard. I have one of these along with a drag & thats pretty much all I use to plant. The disc on the bottom is 699 & one of the cheaper ones out there. Strut10
The top one looks pretty fancy. But the bottom one looks like you could add a good bit of weight to get it to cut.
