Jeramie
I have several ideas. I know one in particular would sale. However, I have no idea where to start. Anyone know how to get started on an idea or what I should be looking for? I know there are a lot of firms out there for inventors but I dont know if I should trust a good idea with them? Anyone have any ideas?
Texan_Til_I_Die
You can't patent an "idea." You need something tangible. This website gives a good brief explanation. http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/doc/general/what.htm
Guest Andrea
Whatever you do.......don't use the ones advertised on tv. I got ripped off.......
Jeramie
Well, actually I didnt mean idea. I can do all drawings in complete detail on any idea I have. So something tangible will not be hard to come by. I just didnt know if I needed to build models or a prototype? Also, do you just apply? Do you need representation from a certain group? etc..... Guest Andrea
I had a drawing, as it would have been almost impossible to manufacture what I had thought of on my own.........
BowtechTurkeyHunter
Contact a patent attorney start there then your idea is secure ... you eventually will have to make prototypes and what not to sell you idea but your attorney will be able to direct you in the right direction ... typically patents cost about 10 to 15 thousand to get off the ground. Good luck with it. Here is a link to look up an attorney in your region. https://oedci.uspto.gov/OEDCI/#search3 Steve
OJR
I agree, hire a patent attorney from the very beginning and get ready to spend some $$$$$$$$ up front!

Without a facility to produce the product a patent is simply a very expensive piece of paper. You might get lucky and a manufacturer will buy the patent rights from you but honestly that's a long shot. Most often they try to find a loophole in the patent and make something similar that doesn't violate it.
