drkillemquick
I am taking two relatively new to hunting individuals out for goose hunting this year( one is my nephew and one is a co-worker). I have been trying to give them some advise to help them out so they are successful. I will be setting up the decoys and blinds, so they don't have to worry about that. However They both have expressed some concerns about their shooting abilities. They have both been shooting some trap to get ready, however they have been asking for some advise as to how to shoot geese. To be honest with you I don't even think about what I do now it just comes naturally now. So here is my question..... if you were going to give some advice to a new goose hunter what would it be! I have talked about swinging through the shot and focussing on one bird, and not shooting blindly into a group! Any help and ideas would be helpful!!! dogdoc
what i have found to be a little deceiving about geese is they look like they are flying so slow b/c of their size and I don't lead them enough. I haven't shot enough to give any good advise. Their body is so big I know at times i have to remind myself for proper lead and not focus on their big body. DU_man_84
you cant tell someone how to lead waterfowl, leading any kind of bird is a natural instinct, every situation is different, sometimes no lead is required sometimes lots of lead is required, its almost something you need to learn on your own, they just need to remember always follow through after the shot, most people like to use the 3 b's on waterfowl, butt, belly, beak, fire this is something their just gonna have to get use too
Bob LeBlanc
If they're Canada's you're hunting... Tell them, "Concentrate on the cheek patch...forget about the rest of the goose and take all of your leads off of the cheek." Bob;)
jcs3344
only way they will learn is by shootin at them...thats the only way ive learned..skeet doesnt help me get ready for duck season as you can always get on a skeet because it doesnt change direction. all shots are different... let them throw some steel and see how it goes...and tell them to keep pullin the trigger and dont give up
stevebeilgard
first thing i'd tell them is the safety thing... don't shoot within 30 degrees of the guy next to you. next, do not over call. if the geese are coming in, let them come. then, wait until they drop their feet before you get up. they rest is natural... rbduck
Depending on the shotgun they are using, limit them to two rounds at a time. This should help in them in concentrating on one bird and taking their time shooting. Ron:D
