ROADKILL04
i was just wondering what everyone prefers shootin i have always shot muzzys and had no problem but was thinking about trying the rage broadheads i have read good things and bad things about mechanicals when they come to quartering shots and so on i was just wanting some opinions
Leo
IMHO, most of the quartering shot horror stories I've heard about mechanicals are attributable to broadheads that are too light. It's true on a large cut diameter head a quartering shot can turn dramatically as it penetrates but I can assure you a fixed that is too light will do the same thing. I can't emphasize enough on these lighter carbon arrows the need to get your FOC above 10%. This is regardless of broadhead style. It's gonna help. I like using both. Here is the way I used to attack it. If it's medium to small size game and the shots will likely be long and exposed to wind then mechanicals are a great way to go. For closer shots at big animals that require a lot of penetration a good fixed is a great way to go. I'm learning some of the mechanicals can equal or better fixed head penetration now. Truthfully, Mechanicals vary greatly in performance as do Fixed heads. In short, I've concluded, it's a mistake to lump them into such broad categories as simply fixed or mechanical. Gotta agree with this. Personally, I've always used fixed myself and they've never let me down.

Gator
Fixed. I don't want to have to worry about my head failing
backwoods07
Of course, it's all a matter of preference. I use mechanicals and have a great deal of confidence that the head will not fail due to simply understanding the physics of entry. You mentioned you shoot Muzzy's. I've seen them do great things and have never heard a complaint. On the other hand, I've seen expandables like the Rage 2 save poor shots and turn them into dead deer. See what works best with your setup and hunting style. By using the Rage, what you lose in penetration, you gain in cutting diameter; and vice versa with the Muzzy. JimT
Either will work. I am using Muzzy four blades this year, but have shot a few deer with Spitfires and Assasins. They all worked great. If the Muzzys are working fine then I would stick with them.
Switchback29A1
I switched a few years ago...it's hard to go back to a fixed blade when you see just how big an exit hole from a mechanical head can be.
Hoyt03
IMO everyone prefers to shoot a fixed blade b/c they are plain better. Now alot of folks are on the lazy side and don't properly tune their bow so fixed heads do not fly right out of their bow and thus instead of messing with their setup they screw on a mechanical b/c it will most of the time hit with your field tips. I used to be in the mechanical group until I got tired of getting weak penetration on deer due to slight angles or hitting ribs etc. Don't get me wrong I got many deer with mechs and had pass throughs too, but overall I needed a change. Got my bow tuned and the slick tricks are flying great.
mule659
I have always used fixed heads and have shot many styles like Muzzy, G5 Strikers and Montec's, Steel Force, NAP Thunderheads and am now using Magnus. They have all worked well so I dont see the reason to use mechanicals.
Tony
i have also gotten very good accuracy with fixed blades. so there was no need for me to shoot a mechanical. i shoot Muzzy 75 gr 3 blades. the biggest thing i was taught was how to spin tune them for better accuracy and to get them to fly like my field tips.
