ate1cropy
When is a good time to start crackin the horns together way up north?
Guest zach90
usually mid-end of october. it depends on the weather too. If we get early freeze and the temps are low. If it is colder then the bucks usually start looking for does and are a little more aggressive. Try using a doe bleat along with a soft grunt call in the early to mid part of october. This usually makes them a little curious so it sometimes can help draw in a few as well. Good luck
wtnhunt
Think where rattling works well, would probably start to draw attention 2 to 3 weeks prior to the pre rut with light sequences. Usually start seeing a little light sparring here around mid October, peak of our rut is usually between the third and fourth week of November. ChasinTail
Im glad you asked that. I was just wondering the same thing. I am always scared to start too early and spook something rather than bring em' in.
ate1cropy
Anyone still have the november issue of field and stream from last year? In it was a calendar of the rut for last year... It was loaded with information on what works best when as far as decoys rattlin and grunting. It told you things to key in on and things to stay away from. It was great, I sure hope they do it again this year!

Saw 2 bucks with their heads together and 2 more looking on late Sunday afternoon.
wtnhunt
FWIW............bucks here have been seen sparring lightly already. Yeah, was kind of surprised to see the same here Saturday. Watched three 1.5 year olds for a good while and they did push around a bit and sparred some. Earliest I have ever seen them actually spar.
