Sunday Hunting

I am sure this been here before but I was reading an article in a book I have and got reminded about it again.

Sunday Hunting? Well folks, that is probably as hot as a topic as inter-racial relationships. I see this in 2 views actually.

I don't like the thought of Sunday hunting for the fact that so many families like to walk the forests or state game lands, etc. A lot of them look forward to it because they know that hunters will not be out there and I support that.

On the other hand, in todays world, so many outdoorsman are stuck working on Saturdays that the only day they have off are on Sundays. Put yourself in their shoes...you love to deer hunt and you look forward to putting that deer in your freezer every year to cut costs on your grocery bill but the last few years been rough and your stuck working Saturdays and the only day you can hunt is on Sunday but you can't because of the law.(WHOOOO, that was a long sentence grin.gif)

Now one thing I do not agree with is alot of Christian folks oppose it for the simple fact that Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest. Yeah right. I bet they work around their yard and house on Sundays though. When I hear that excuse to oppose Sunday hunting, it makes me mad. If they can work on their shed or new garage or whatever the case may be, then why can't that hunter go out and hunt. Heck, he is probably doing less work than Christian that stays home. BTW, I added that in there because I know someone is bound to bring that up in here. Let me hear your thoghts on this wink.gif

Re: Sunday Hunting

I am one of the hunters who works 5 1/2 days a week. That gives me Saturday afternoons to hunt, unless I take Saturday off. I would love to be able to hunt on Sunday. There is a bill coming up in Connecticut to allow bow hunting on private land on Sundays. That would be a start, but in all honesty, I doubt it will go through.

Everytime someone tries to pass a Sunday hunting bill in CT it either gets pushed aside, or turned down.

Re: Sunday Hunting

I work retail 6 days a week and Sunday is my only day off oppertunity to a solid day hunt, I say if the Sunday Folks want to take a stroll in the woods during deer season by all means go ahead, but be aware this is hunting season and it only last for a little while....and not all of us Catholics practice the day of rest ritual, as I was raised on a Farm and the cows last I checked didn't milk thenselves.. grin.gif

Re: Sunday Hunting

No Sunday hunting here in NC and I think it is stupid, it is one of those so called blue laws that they passed back in the day cause ladies were upset their men were out hunting instead of being in church. Well, the way I see it, you can golf, shoot, fish, play any sport you want to, buy beer, go to church, not go to church, go to the movies or do whatever else you want to in this state on a Sunday except hunt, does that make ANY SENSE WHATSOEVER to you gentlemen.

I e-mailed the state wildlife commissioner on this very subject, who lives right here in Fayetteville, guess what response I got. NONE !!

Re: Sunday Hunting

I have lived here in the middle of the "Bible Belt" most of my life.

We have always had Sunday hunting as far back as I can remember.

We were one of the last States to have "Blue Laws".

Believe me, if they were to stop Sunday Hunting here, there would be an outcry from the hunters you could hear all the way up in MA.

There aren't any legislators that have the nerve to raise the question of stopping our Sunday Hunting.

I personally, cannot think of any better way to worship my creator, than to go out after church and try to kill some of His four legged creatures.

Re: Sunday Hunting

Slug - I've preached it before and will preach it again. In NC you've got a hugh battle ahead of you but hunters as a whole have to come together to get this law put to a vote and if I remember correctly, every time it's brought up there's not enough support for it meaning hunters are not on board and until that happens - you're watching Nascar on Sunday and not whitetails!

Re: Sunday Hunting

I have occasionally hunted on Sunday, but have never seen a deer. My wife says God won't let me. I tend to believe her. smirk.gif I feel guilty everytime I do, because we usually spend most of Sunday at church as a family.

Do I think it's wrong? For me, yes it is.

Do I think the state should mandate it? No

These are the same states that are outlawing a manger scene in public at Christmas time. It just doens't make sence. You can't have it both ways.

Re: Sunday Hunting

Maine is currently looking at allowing hunting on Sundays, but from what I understand it will be for all the hunting seasons except deer (and that is when we really need the extra time!) I was reading that land owners liked having that day off from hunting and some would close their land to hunting if the bill passes.

I would love to be able to hunt on Sundays but not if it is going to close land. I can only hunt on Saturday and Thanksgiving and the hunting isn't that good around here! LOL An extra couple of days would be nice...until then we always have the great state of New Hampshire that will let us hunt then.

Re: Sunday Hunting

Yeah, that is what I was sorta getting too. I am from PA and I know that is one of the hot topics on the agenda. Me personnaly, being how my time is cut short as it is when I go on leave and go home to PA to hunt, I would love to see Sunday hunting passed. Like I said, I see it in two different views!

Re: Sunday Hunting

Anyone interested in a Pastor's viewpoint???

(I hear all of you mumbling "No" already) tongue.gif

As Jesus said. God created the Sabbath for man and not man for the Sabbath. Meaning we are not bound to the Sabbath. He wants us to honor it and when we do He will bless us for honoring it. Jesus actually got people mad at him for healing on the Sabbath.

God convicts each one of us as individuals. So if you feel it is wrong you shouldn't do it. I think it should be allowed shocked.gif It isn't in VA. I wouldn't be able to anyway since Sunday is a workday for me. (off Fri though!!)

on soapbox

When you hunt always remember to thank God for the opportunity and praise him for all of His creation. It is impossible to sit in the woods and not enjoy what He has created. However don't allow something to be more important to you than your relationship to your creator. Otherwise that thing becomes an idol.

Off soapbox grin.gif

Thanks for listening and remember that God was the first hunter. After Eve gave Adam that apple......God killed animals to clothe Adam and Eve!!! So is it okay to say "God is a deerslayer"!?

Re: Sunday Hunting

Personally I see nothing wrong with hunting on Sunday. But Ive heard arguments for it that have nothing to do with church.Such as giving the game, and the landowners who let people in a day off. That I can understand, if someones nice enough to let you hunt thier land Sunday may be the only day they get to spend with thier families, they may not appreciate hunters banging on the door asking for permission all day.

But, if that were the caseits something that could be worked out between the landowner and the hunters ahead of time, not something the state should mandate.

As for giving the animals a chance to rest, I dont believe any other predators take the day off so that arguments pretty much a crock. After being hunted 6 days a week their behaviors not gonna change by giving them the 7th day off to be chased around by coyotes.

As far as church goes Im not a real religous man, but watching the sun come up in my treestands a lot closer to God then Ive ever felt while attending church, but to each his own I suppose. grin.gif

Great reply. That is part of my every hunting experience every time no matter what day. This year I explained this very idea of how I give thanks to God for everything we encounter to my 8 year old daughter after we got in the blind the first time we went out, she closed her eyes as did I and silently prayed to herself for a moment. Brought tears of joy to my eyes.

Re: Sunday Hunting

That a way Mad HP.Sask. is the bible belt of Canada. No sunday hunting. The wardens are even in favor of sunday hunting.@ least the one I've talked to.People say they need a day off.The warden laughed & said it was there busiest day. They're out there trying to enforce it.So there out there anyway, you might as well allow it.I get 2 days off a week.I work hard for 5.I should be able to do what I want on my days off & not have someone tell me I cant.
