Wsm Verus Reg. Calibers

I own both a .300 Win Mag and a .300 WSM. I'd take the .300 WSM over the win mag any day!! Not only are the ballistics better, but the .300 WSM shells are about the length of a .308 Win, just bigger width wise. (It's like a .308 on steroids. :D) Don't get me wrong, I love the .300 Win Mag, but the shells are huge to carry and you have the long action rifle. With the WSM you get the smaller shells which are easier to carry, you get the short action gun, and you get better ballistics. That's my personal view on it. ;)

Here's the muzzle ballistics of a .300 Win Mag in 180gr in Supreme Elite™ XP3

3000fps

3597 lb ft

The .300 WSM, exact same cartridge.....

3010fps

3621 lb ft

Depends what you consider "better".

The WSM round comes in a shorter action. In real life that means a fraction of an inch less bolt throw and a couple ounces lighter rifle. If that's important to you them the WSM is better.

The WSM rounds in factory loaded configuration have a few fps higher velocity. The difference in trajectory figures out that the WSM (.300 WSM in this instance) will shoot exactly 3 inches flatter..................at 1000 yards. If that's important to you then the WSM is better.

The .300 Win Mag will develop 50-100 fps more velocity than the WSM if you reload. That makes for a 4 1/2 inch difference in trajectory..........at 500 yards in favor of the Win Mag. If that's significant to you then the Win Mag is better.

Factory ammo for the Win Mag will be marginally less expensive than WSM ammo. If that's important to you then the Win Mag is better.

I'm a win Mag fan. Always have been..............mostly because that's what I have a couple of. I do reload and I am the Grand Poobah of the OTPG. Therefore that extra 50-100 fps is all important to me. I don't suppose it's that important to a deer or bear who won't know the difference if he got hit a 3000 fps or 3100 fps. In reality the differences between the two in all aspects are statistically insignificant.

I Was Wondering If A Wsm Round Is Better Than A Regular Rifle Round.

No...... pure and simple. Just another way for Gun and Ammo companies to sell products. Don did an excellent job of comparing the two in his post. I would like to add that the gun weight/bolt length/cartridge size differences are so minor that in a real hunting situation they aren't even noticed.

Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly were gifted dancers, but it wasn't because of their shoes. The shoe companies would like you to think otherwise.

Well I wouldnt be so quick to say they're ballisticly the same guys.

According to federal firearms ballistic programs with their premium ammo the difference in velocity with my .270 WSM is huge compared to the .270 standard.

.270 WSM 130gr Nosler Ballistic tip = 3300 FPS /3140 ME and -32.2in low at 500 yards with a 200 yard zero.

.270 standard 130gr Nosler Ballistic tip = 3060 FPS / 2704 ME and -38.4inches low at 500 yards with a 200 yard zero.

Now with a deer at full run Id rather point and click with the velocity difference.

Also....

.223 WSSM 36gr Barnes Varmint Grenade ~4500Fps maxed loaded.

.223 standard 36gr Barnes Varmint Grenade ~3850Fps max loaded.

The differences are quite clear for certain calibers you decide whether you'd like to pay more for more performance.

Full run at 500 yards? I'm impressed, considering your almost three feet of drop...just how far do you lead a deer at full run at 500 yards?

I mentioned the bullet drop for simply stating the trajectory and for those people that might like to shoot their guns at targets.

You never make a shot you dont take and I would feel alot more confident with the .270 wsm at ranges beyond 350yards then i would a standard .270.

As for the 223 wssm you cant dispute the difference, its just that phenomenally huge.

Just thought of something that could make millions.....

A rangefinder that not only tells you the yardage to the deer...but also shows crossairs of 28 1/2' in front and 3' drop of a running deer...all incorperated into your scope! That would really take the guess work out of it.

Or, you could just rely on the ol' trusrty ELF (Extreme Luck Factor :D)
