aujack
I have now decided that it might be time this year to use my dads remington 270 rather my marlin 30-30 he doesn't care which one i use and ihave killed a few deer with the 30-30. what do you think? Strut10
If your shots are 150 yards or under there's really not much difference one fron the other. Longer shots will be better taken with the .270. It also depends on which gun fits you better. Get some range time in with both and pick the one that feels more natural to you. Flintlock1776
Either will do you well. Just shoot it in with practice. Good luck
Leo
Since you have the choice. Take the 270WIN. The 30-30 is more limited by bullet selection and effective range. You're likely getting to the point you can take advantage of the improvement. Personally, if I had the same choice between those two I'd grab the 270WIN ever single time. Guest Finn
I'd take the .270.....just in case you have a longer shot.
OJR
I've used a 270 for over 50 years and it is a great caliber for hunting. I would go with it! Good luck with whatever you choose to use!
Adjam5
Shoot whatever your comfortable with. I have used the 30/30 with much success. Of course all shots have been under 100 yards. The .270 does bring the advantage of the flatter shooting, harder hitting, long distance caliber. It will be better deer medicine at longer ranges. I have both guns here, if I needed to make a choice. The 270 wins hands down, no contest! The 270 hits harder, flatter shooting, more take down power! Shot placement no matter what you use is critical, but with a 270, you can drop them in their tracks! I love my 270.

Good luck with whatever you choose to use! i'd go with the 270 also. first, it's my favorite caliber. second, it belongs to your day. 3rd, you've never used it to kill before. good stuff all the way. Jeramie
.270 hands down. The only deer ive ever lost was due to a 100 yard shot with a 30-30. I love the old round but keep the distances like that of a Ml'er. The .270 outshines the 30-30 by a big margin IMHO.
Texan_Til_I_Die
I agree with the 270 as a first choice. The only time I ever pick up my old 30-30 is when I'm rattling for someone else. In that situation, I'll usually bury up in the brush while the main hunter sits in an elevated position a short distance away. I like the 30-30 for that situation because it has open sites and I may have to make a 10 yard "self defense" shot if the big boy comes charging in without giving the other guy a shot opportunity. whitetailhunter32210
you must decide that for yourself by what you shoot best, you also have to take your hunting area in consideration. If you are hunting in the woods where there is some thick brush then 30-30 all the way. but if you are hunting over an open food plot or grain field where you are often met with 200 or greater yard shots, the .270 will definately hold better in that situation. I have always used a .270 but I rarley rifle hunt in the woods
Illinois59
over 200 yards, 270 for me.
David_218
I'd take the .270.....just in case you have a longer shot. Me Too! While the .30-30 is a great cartridge for Deer, it is a under 150 yard gun though. The .30-30 is more of a "Woods" or "Brush" gun where the ranges are < than 100 yards. Use 170 grainers, if you chose this caliber.
PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
I am of the Jim Carmichael thought here. The 30-30 is most always a lever action and is a great brush gun as it has a short barrel. The idea of the 30-30 pushing through heavy brush and limbs on its way to the intended target is not very accurate. Infact all bullets deflect when clipping off brush. The fact that a 270 is a smaller bullet traveling faster makes it in my small mind a better option even in the brush. I used a 270 from 1976 till 2004 and killed deer in the open and in the woods. Since 2004 I have used a 7mm mag and use it in both locations also.
