Hoosierbuck
Might be too late for some to make it their first deer of the season, but then I guess your next deer would be good enough. Had a discussion on another board that spawned this: Who is willing to give his hunter's first fruits (first deer harvested) to the hungry? I think it would be a pretty strong statement, and a leap of faith for some guys who don't normally get a crack at too many deer in a given season. I think it would be intereseting to see who goes in for this and how their season goes versus their usual. Visit www.FHFH.org for Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry, or look for a similar organization or food bank in your area that will accept venison. Anyone willing to commit to it? I am in. Hoosierbuck
Nobody? That's surprising. They pay for the processing and everything... HB
Bowtech_archer07
All the food banks and everything in this area charge for the processing the meat.
backwoods07
I would've loved to have participated, but unfortunately no participating processors anywhere near me...Maybe some more processors will jump on the bandwagon as the season progresses. I've been looking to do this for quite some time now without paying full price for processing.
hunter1963
We have done it here in Lafayette, IN they take so many for free, after that they will take them if you pay the processing.

Most of the places are WAY down south and I'm way up north. I'm going to try to get in touch with as many butchers as I can and see if they have anything to offer. Thanks for re-lighting the flame for me though!
wtnhunt
All the food banks and everything in this area charge for the processing the meat. Pretty sure it is the same way for the processors around here locally. Seems like someone asked a similar question a while back and I looked up the closest place to donate that would process the deer free of charge and it was over an hour away, the two in the program you posted a link to are over two hours from here. Given current gas prices, would be better off to just donate a deer and pay the processing charge, but we process our own anyway.
Ohiobucks
I'll donate one this year. Knox county Ohio has Youngs Locker listed as a participant in the meat processors list. I'll call them to confirm they are active with the program and get some details.

In the past there were a couple of places in downtown Columbus that took deer, but it was a pain in the butt to get down there during their hours and such. And before Tom pops off, this is all supposing I kill a deer this year.
Hoosierbuck
If your first one goes to the Lord's work, I suspect you might do better than that... Thanks for the interest, guys. This is what I was hoping for. We can do a lot of good here. HB

HOYTnMUZZYboy
I'm in as long as I can find a butcher that can atleast cut the cost in half or something. Around here butchers are pretty tight with there money. Hopefully I will have one on the ground in the am!!
Ohiobucks
Knox county Ohio has Youngs Locker listed as a participant in the meat processors list. I'll call them to confirm they are active with the program and get some details. I contacted Young's Locker today, they were in the program last year, but have not heard from them this year. Last year, they covered everything except a butchering fee of $15.00. If logistics work and a doe cooperates with me, I'm going to drop her off there.... kingfisherfd2
I have to look around. There is a butcher that looks like it might be within 30 minutes of me, but I want to make sure that they are participating. We can take up to 6 deer and apply for an additional 2 online this year. I still have meat from my deer last year, so I will probably only need one. It depends how much it will cost me. 15 bucks would be a done deal. Do you get to keep the backstraps? Tominator
Tithe fulfilled 11-1-08 with 120# doe. HB Good deal. I donated the doe I shot last Sunday to a needy family. It happened to be a student that I have in class, he was pretty overwhelmed. Plan on donating my next doe too.
Ohiobucks
Donated a doe I shot last Sunday afternoon. Youngs Locker in Danville Ohio took the deer, I was ready to pay the processing fee, but they said it was all taken care of - no charge. I hope it helps a family that is in need. BTW, this really makes you feel good inside as well. Everyone should try it.

Contact that fellow and see if it is feasible for you to work it out with him. Thanks for thinking of others, and welcome to RT!! HB
jbaker
Giving I too have gave to the food banks in Lafayette, IN in the past years. I took it to the processor listed and they said they had processed the limit of free deer. So I told them I was willing to pay for the processing so the food bank did'nt have to. The processor was shocked to say the least. He said no one had ever done that before. I was amazed that if someone had a giving heart to donate to the needy that a few $$'s would stand in their way. If God lays it on your heart to give, then give!!! Not only if it does'nt cost you anything. Besides, you will be blessed. I will be giving a deer this year as well even if I have to pay again. When I told the processor that I would pay for it, he gave me a break on the fees.
Hoosierbuck
OH-and thank you to those who have donated! You guys rock. It does feel pretty good to be able to provide for so many. My little local food bank doesn't get meat very often, and mine was the first deer the local processor had gotten donated in his first year of participation. His wife works at the food bank, so he was really excited to let her know he had one for her. Then, a week later, in horrible conditions I had a nice fat one feed within 20 yards and stand there broadside. Now she is in my freezer. Coincidence? Maybe...
