Question about varmit rounds for larger rifles

I said it once and I'll say it again, If you don't want the hide, it don't matter what caliber or grain bullet you use. A dead dog is a dead dog. grin.gif

You may try a larger grain bullet like a 150gr or even a 180gr. The larger grain bullets are designed for larger game. When a larger grain bullet hits an animal the size of a coyote it doesn't have time to expand like it would hitting larger animals. You won't get much pelt damage.

But if you want to use a smaller grain bullet I would use the 100gr PSP. Don't waste your money on the Accelerators.

Re: Thanks - What\'s wrong with the Accelerators?

If you don't care about pelt damage, just use what you deer hunt with. Hunting coyotes with what the deer hunt with will help your shooting practice, and you won't have to readjust your scope back when deer season rolls around.

I also shoot a .300wsm. This is going to be my primary coyote gun for a while. Has anyone hit a dog with one of these? Just curious... Thanks!

Re: Question about varmit rounds for larger rifles

I've shot groundhog with both the .270 (90 grain HP bullet) and .30-06 (125 grain SPT). Both are fine for longer ranges, like in many Western States. The only down side to them is the excessive muzzle blast (noise). I like cartridges in the .22 Hornet to 243 range for hunting Varmints.
