LOOKY Here! .243 You Chose???

I've got 2 remington vls rifles.. .308 and a .223 both shoot very well. I think you'll find in this forum a lot like the new Savage rifles. Great shooting rifles and the acutrigger is able to be finely tuned. I've got a Ruger m77 is 7mag and love it also. Are you definitely sticking with the .243? will you use the rifle for just varmits or other game also?

I would also go for the VLS out of those three. Here is another vote for the Savage short action in .243 Win. Since you mentioned it will be a dual purpose gun, do you intend to carry this gun in search of deer? If so, I would get a sporter weight gun, as it will be a lot lighter to carry. Bull barreled varmint guns get heavy after a while.

I have a Remington (I know your favorite) Model 7 in 243 Win and a T/C Encore with a Virgin Valley 15" barrel chambered in .243 Win.

Will you be keeping any of the hides from the varmits? I'm guessing you're going after mostly coyotes. Have you looked at the .260 Remington or the .270 Win? They would be a little bit heftier for the deer. Don't get me wrong, a .243 will do the job, I've killed a few with one. I guess it just depends on if it's going to be more of a deer gun or varmit gun.

If you haven't checked out the .260 it might be worthwhile.

My wife has a savage model 10 I bought her in .243. She killed a deer with it this year, and I killed a coyote with it. It is a very accurate rifle, and is very light. If I were buying a new rifle for varmint hunting for me though, I would likely go with the 700 vls.

Hey bud, i have a ruger 243 standard bolt, its awesome, killed a nine with a drop tine at 384 this year. It is a very capable deer and varmint gun. If you want lightweight, get a Ruger Compact, has a 16 and 1/2 barrel and weighs 5 and 1/4 pounds i think. LIGHT, then put a nice compact scope on it and u will be good to go.

A buddy of mine has a remington .243 model 7 and loves it. i've even hunted w/ it and shot a couple hogs and deer. it's a very lightweight and compact gun. I would def. recommend it . On the other hand i bought a browning a-bolt, although its not a .243 i still love it. Both great guns..good luck.

Why so enamored with a .243? Gunwriters everywhere as well as even bullet makers list it as marginal for deer. Why not .257 roberts, 25-06, .260, .270, 7mm-08. There are so many other great calibers to choose from that would not only do the trick but do it better. If you handload there are all sorts of varint style bullets you can use.

I know that there will be some ruffled feathers, and that is not my intent. Just believe that since there are better choices for the same price even, why go so small.

Re: LOOKY Here! .243 You Chose???

I started hunting in 2001. Because of my frame I had to use a youth model .243. I have taken all of my deer ( with the exception of one) with that gun. HOWEVER...I am switching over to a .308 for next season. Why? Even though I have taken some wall hangers with my .243, I shot the last one with a .308 and fell in love with it. It's more powerful and I really like the idea that it was lever action. A .243 is okay if you are a child or small person or just a beginner. Yes, it will kill a deer just fine as long as your aim is where it should be. And I am a novice to this sport and my opinion may not hold much water with anyone. There are a lot of different styles of guns out there and there's one for everyone. Mine just happens to be a .308 with a Swarovski scope. grin.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Because thats the rifle he wants to buy. Would I buy a .243 as my primary deer gun? Nope. But if thats what he wants it is cool with me. I know several people that have shot a deer with a .243. They went no where. I am not trying to start anything either, but the .243 is a good deer round when the hunter does their part.

I often take out my .243 Win deer gun. I do not feel under gunned with it in the least. I ahve many choices to choose from between the 243 up to .45-70. The little gun will do the job as well as the biggest magnum will.

Re: LOOKY Here! .243 You Chose???

well here is the deal with a .243 it is a light caliber yes. but it will kill any thing that the .308 and the rest of them. the 243 is more of a varmit round to begin with its flat and fast. it will evan put down an elk. i use the 7mm rem mag and beleave me the poeple who think the 30.06 hurts to shoot or kicks too much, the 7mm mag will push you around( kicks like a mule) but i love it. as it is now im looking for a new scope for it.the 7mm mag pushes me around and it make me take a step or two back some times, and im a little over 200 lbs. the whole point with a 243 is that it will get you used to shooting and with 308 im not a big fan of it. with lever action i would go with a 30-30. no recoil at all and will kill any thing you want it too. but its not flat nor fast but it has the knock down power nesesary to kill the game. but if a person could get either a bolt lever(with a clip like brownings) or semi auto( mini 30) they could reload the empty 30-30 shells with 30.06 slugs and flaten out the trajectory and speed it up. 30-30 and the 30.06 is the same. they are 30cal.
