PAhunter14
I was told before it was caused by injury.
Guest Primetime/IL
I shot an 8pt from 03' that had identical tips like that, it was only on one tine though. Not sure what would cause it, it could be genetics or even an injury.
HOYTnMUZZYboy
From what I have heard i'm gonna half to agree with injury. What I read was if they bump them severly enough while in velvet that can happen, or if they get hurt anywhere on there body it can also happen. While I was at the shotgun check station last year a guy brought in a 150 class buck that had the right side of his rack pretty much went straight up, while the guy was field dressing the buck he said he found this and showed us half an arrow with the broadhead still attached. It's hard to tell if thats why the rack did that, but some of the nature guys at the check station said that, thats prolly the reason the bucks rack was messed up. ccwhitey
I agree with HoytnMUZZYboy. I have heard that if damage is done to them in velvet they will have a disformed rack. It can also be cause by someone shooting it and not killing it or the deer getting injured while fighting
Bowtech_archer07
I agree with all of the above. I have also heard that if a bug bites the antler while the deer is in velvet, it can cause an "acorn" on the antler.
slaw
I don't know how they come about. I have killed many with that trait on their antlers.....all over the state of Illinois.
NiteRunner
I've always heard injury. The first buck I killed had the acorns all on the one side. Pretty neat actually. One tine even was bent in half and made it look like a Goose Head.
MichiganHunter
I was told it could be one of two things. one is an injury to the antler wile growing the other is a bug can bite or bore into the horn and cause it. I think the DNR officer that told me that was saying like ticks or something like that wile the antler is still soft and blood filled
