Ethics ??

I was out sitting in my ladder stand last night, didn't see any deer but had a good size flock of turkeys come into my setup, this isn't the first time this has happened in this location. Out of this flock there's a couple nice Toms and a real nice bearded hen ..:cool:

Here's the question,,,

I've looked all over our game laws and couldn't find anywhere where it would be illegal for me to hunt turkeys from a elevated position.

Is this considered an unethical tactic ?? Or is it something I should consider trying with my bow this spring ?? ( NO fall season in my area .. In fact I can't hunt turkey's past 12:00 here in VT.. :( )

I've never taken a Turkey with my bow and would really like a shot at that bearded hen ,,;)

So what's everyones opinion on this ?? ...

There's no law against it in OHIO either. I don't believe it woud be unethical. That's like saying deer hunting from a treestand is unethical if you ask me. If it's legal then you have to make your own decision. I will say that there are some things in OHIO that are legal that I will never take part in because I don't believe them to be ethical. Like I said it's all up to you.

I don't think it's unethical at all. Their eyesight is good enough where they can pick you off from just about anywhere, so it's not like sitting in an elevated position gives you an unfair advantage. Go for it!

True...and all it takes is ONE LOUSY STINKING BIRD TO SEE YOU BRING THE BOW UP AND POOOOF...THIER GONE!!!!:p

Just wait until the majority of the birds pass behind a piece of brush so when THE LAST STINKING BIRD PICKS YOU OFF you have a chance as all the rest of them try to follow the STINKING BIRD THAT PICKED YOU OFF...I'm, I'm,I'm sorry...just venting:D

Being elevated isn't nearly as big an advantage with turkeys as it is with deer. They're accustomed to looking up for trouble. I've been busted twice this year (we have a Fall season in Texas) by gobblers before I even got my bow half way up. And I'm hunting from a 14 foot tripod and have a thick tangle of cover behind me to break up my silhouette.

I had heard that it was illegal to hunt them here from a tree stand in the spring and I know that it is also illegal to use a rifle for spring turkeys here, but I have never found any reg to support the elevated part in our handbook. Counties where there are fall seasons from what I understand it is legal to kill them with rifles or bows from treestands while deer hunting as long as you have the appropriate big game license.

Don't think it would be unethical either Luke, so long as the regs are not against it I would go for it. No fall season for them in our county YET, but I see a lot more birds this time of year than what I see in the spring. They ever open up a fall season for us and I will be giving Mr. Casey(our game warden) a phone call and getting a definite answer for here. They do look up too, have been busted by them in the past in tree stands, but only after they got really close.

True dat.

Nothing unethical about it at all. You just try to get your bow back on them. Chances are you'll get busted. Once in a long while you'll get lucky and pull it off. But not too often. Them goofy birds can see you think, for cryin' ouy loud!! :o You're not at as much of an advantage up there in a tree as you percieve yourself as being..........trust me. ;)

I'll have to give this a try this spring ... They return again tonite, so I decided to do a little test run. As soon as they past my stand I reached for the bow and held it up like I was going to draw,, and I actually got away with it ... :D:eek::D

Goofy Birds is right ... I bet when it comes spring time where I can actually kill one trying to use this tatic ,, I get busted ...:rolleyes:

THANKS for the replies folks .. :)

Here in Michigan they do not allow elevated blinds in spring hunts but fall they allow it just for that reason, they figure that if they let people hunt turkeys wile in a deer stand they can sell more turkey licenses, I don't think there is anything wrong with it weather it is summer or fall if you have a BOW with a shot gun it should be from the ground.........

Personally: SMACK ONE had a a few toms walk under me just as soon as bow season opened so i bought a turkey tag and fully intend on smoking one just as soon as i can.
