Buck of a lifetime for youth hunter!!

Have you ever had one of those hunts where it turn out, it must have just been meant to be??? I have a neighbor whose name is Curt. Curt is 15 and a super great kid. My son Avery is 8 and really looks up to Curt as Curt has spent some real quality time with my son. He took Avery fishing this last summer in a kids tournament and Avery took second place. Anyways, Curt has never killed a deer and I thought that would be a fitting thing to do for all he has done for Avery.

The deal was, I would take out Curt to our hunting land and let him shoot a doe during the WI youth hunt. During this hunt kids 12-15 years of age may hunt with a gun and shoot either a buck or a doe.

Here's the hunt. 4:55 we climb up into an elevated box blind and get comfortable. He gets to sit on a comfy office chair while I sit on a bucket. Anyways, I tell him to pick up the gun and get a good sight picture and hold the cross hairs on a spot out in the foodplot. Everything looks good and we set the gun in the corner. Within a minute we get our first glimpse of a deer. I think it was a fawn but, I'm not real sure.

We continue to hunt and about 30 minutes before shooting time ended we have a small doe (last years fawn) come out on to the foodplot at about 30 yards. Perfect shot but, I'd really like his first to be a real nice doe. He said "lets wait for a bigger one." I just thought to myself, I really hope we get to see another one. 15 minutes later a small buck steps out at about 100 yards and we both got to watch as he fed off.

It's now about 4 minutes before shooting time ends and I'm saying a little prayer hoping that a nice doe will step out and all of a sudden Curt says, there's one!! I look out and see a pretty nice buck. Good, I thought to myself at least we'll get to see a nice buck even if we don't get to shoot a doe. I picked up my Binoculars and gave him a little better inspection and quickly realized he was in FULL VELVET!!

I tried to contain my excitement as we all know the bucks should have all lost their velvet a month ago!!

"Curt" I said, "why don't you go ahead and shoot that buck, I know which one that is"... (I had no clue but I was trying to contain myself so he wouldn't get as worked up as I was! :o:D "Are you sure" he said. Yep, go ahead. He brought the gun out of the window and got a steady rest. He did really good and kept asking me, "are you sure I can shoot that?"

At this point I'm ready to hyperventilate as I know this is a rare trophy and I just want him to pull the trigger!! Two more deer step out and he says, ones a doe should I shoot that one instead? I just pushed the gun barrel back towards the buck and gave him a wink and said kill that buck. For what seemed like an eternity he steadied his aim and I did everything imaginable to try to stop myself from shaking him right out of the stand and he squeezed the trigger. BANG, the 300 Win. barked and the buck dropped. Not a step. Curt, you just shot a trophy buck!! we high fived and shook hands and he kept thanking me over and over again. I just couldn't stop laughing and smiling.

We got down from the stand and walked over to the buck and he said "he's in full velvet!" I said yep, you'll probably never get another chance to kill a buck like that.

After teaching him to gut it and taking a few pics we brought it home to where his mom and dad were anxiously waiting as we called and said it may be a little bit before we get home, Curtie shot a doe!

When we got to Curts house and his dad saw what a trophy he had killed, he just about lost it. You just don't know how good that made me feel...

Anyways, here's Curt first deer ever, not the biggest deer in the woods but a true trophy...

Man thats awesome i've never even seen a deer in full velvet. much less shot one! way to go!
I think it was a genetic defect. :o Apparently the warden said that was the third one he's seen this year. I didn't get to talk to him personally but, I'm guessing there are too many deer??? The poor thing was robbed in the "man department". Not that they weren't there, they were just really small. :o:D
