layin on the smackdown
I have never been one to have very much success when hunting on a full moon...needless to say, right now we have almost a full moon and i am hesitant on going out in the morning tomorrow becuase of it. Can anyone steer me in the right direction with this. I have done a ton of research on this topic, and even written a paper on it in college, but i still don't have the answers i am looking for. is it worth it? I mean its always worth it, but should i anticipate morning daylight activity/feeding or should i anticipate movement to bedding areas? We have a heck of a cold one coming tonite, which makes me very excited, supposed to be 34 tonite, and i am expecting the deer to be on their feet and feeding in the morning daylight hours...ANyone have any input regarding this issue??? Thanks
Flintlock1776
Any day afield is better than the alternative. I share your thoughts on a full moon but something could spook up a deer on a day when you don't expect a lot of activity. My Prime Times deer software shows activity is waning to fair for the next few days and pretty low until it builds up by 11/11/08 and hits peak at 11/14. That also seems to be the ntypical time for the peak of the rut here. Go anyway beats looking at the boob tube;)

GWSmith
or should i anticipate movement to bedding areas? For the mornings...Yes It may not be setting the world on fire for activity but like Flinty said..."It's better than watching the boob tube". Consider hunting during the middle of the day hours as well...after feeding all night you'll often times see increased deer movement during lunchtime hours. I like many of us have had trouble sleeping the night before a hunt. My personal little trick that has worked for me: I used to go outside and see when the Moon was exactly overhead in the sky....I'd count to see what time 12 hours later was. I've seen deer 99% of the time while hunting...up and moving in the 3 hour time span around that time. I'm fairly sure it would have been 100% of the time...but I was probably doing an internal eyelid inspection while on the stand:o;)
VermontHunter
My motto with moon phases: If you have time to hunt, and want to hunt. Hunt. Who can argue that theory .. sounds like some real sound advice IMHO ...

Ohiobucks
My motto with moon phases: If you have time to hunt, and want to hunt. Hunt. That's your "Moon phase motto". Tell 'em the "Warm temps motto" that you muttered to me last Wednesday when we met back at the truck, after we both got skunked, both sweating through our camo, both wondering why we even made the trip down. It was something to the effect of, "Why do we even hunt when it's 80 degrees out?"
layin on the smackdown
Thanks for all the info guys! I love pulling off mid day hunts, but tomorrow, work won't let me out...i only have the morning through about 9 to hunt so i guess i will just sit it out and hope my berries don't freeze off! You all know how cold that first real cold morning is of the year; 34 feels like 9. I also have a theory regarding weather/moon phases... You just never know what might happen unless you are there... I'll keep an eye on that moon counting idea too, sounds plausable. Well, i'm goona go, moon phases don't really dictate IF i will go, they just play with my emotions and make me think entirely too deep into it! Good Quotes all around too! Good Huntin! Tominator
yep:). what chris said. by the way, chris. where was the moon last week when you shot that little bucK??? LOL Just rising in the east Steve. I think the 12th was full moon or nearly so. That's your "Moon phase motto". Tell 'em the "Warm temps motto" that you muttered to me last Wednesday when we met back at the truck, after we both got skunked, both sweating through our camo, both wondering why we even made the trip down. It was something to the effect of, "Why do we even hunt when it's 80 degrees out?" Clearly, Wednesday was a relative humidity waste of a hunt. The gumbo helped though. c_lou
I shot my first buck on a Full moon night. I got him about 5:30. You aren't going to shoot anything sitting in the house.

Flintlock1776
Just get a GPS with game times built in or buy Prime Times 2 CD and it will do the math and you can get some sleep there GW:D;)
elkoholic
Hunt the rising full moon if you can. Hunt the time frame of 10 to 14 hours after the full moon has reached highest point in sky (what GW said) if you can. Hunt the morning after a full moon, as close to bedding area as possible if you can. Hunt when you can.
layin on the smackdown
Well, i went out this morning...it was a beautiful morning to be out, definitely cold, just didn't see a thing other than a train load of geese. On my way out i did notice a fresh scrape and a huge rub line so i put the camera on the scrape in hopes of getting to know who might be up to what out there...its always interesting to see some new faces as well. If i get what i am hoping for, I may go with a ground blind set up and see what happens; don't have a lot of options in this one little area. m gardner
If the moon is full the deer sometimes bed at daylight so you may see them laying down. If this is the case, remember, their bellies begin to get empty after 6 to 8 hours and they will get up to feed a bit. Be in a stand close to where they bed to capitalize on this. huntermq32
Think about it this way, every critter inthe woods is active including prediters. The deer in my area tend to be scarce at this time and when they do move they are at full alert makeing it hard to fool their senses. I like to hunt 1\4 moon over head right at dark or under foot at first light. And if I hunt on a full moon I see most of my deer between 9:00am to 11:00am. good luck to all.
