WIDeer4Life
Hey guys, it's been awhile since I've posted last (been busy with school). I just have a question about a farm Im hunting. This will be the second year I've hunted it and have a few questions.1. I've been setting up with my climber near the red dot. It's basically like a bowl between the two points that run out.2. Would the center of the red box be considered a bench?3. I can basically hunt within the black square. Does anyone see any other areas that may be promising?Also...the far right side of the black box (the east side) is an overgrown fence line with trees and everything. Do you think the deer will cross at this point to get from the two patches of woods? There are crop fields inbetween. If anyone has any information to offer I would appreciate it. Thank you! GWSmith
Can you get a bigger picture of that map? Sorry older eyes:o;) A "Bench" in my opinion is anything that is flat and level enough(like an old roadway) off the side of a hill or ridge where a deer can bed or feed relatively at ease. SpcNape
I'm not 100% on what a bench is considered. The terms I'm gonna use are military map terrain features, so I hope they help you and not confuse you. As GW said the map is a little hard to read at that size but what I'm gathering is that your stand is located just a little bit below the ridgeline. Correct me if I'm wrong but you can look down on a valley. I don't know the scale of your contour lines but I am going to guess that your hunting about fourty feet below the top of the ridge top. And can you tell me if that line that runs at the top of the hill is a road of is that apart of the contour lines? By the placement of your red dot you look to be sitting at the top of a spur. The best way to find out what those terms means is just google "military map terrain features" and you should be able to get diagrams that will show you what each term refers to. sskybnd
its hard to tell with the map, with out being abale to see the contor lines, but like gw said any level ground on the side of the hill would be considered a bench, unless it runs between to hills than its called a saddle. GWSmith
This may help in figuring out what your looking at on a Topo;) http://www.map-reading.com/ch10-6.php Wher they have the word "Ridge" in fig. 10-20...that to me is a "Bench". It's an area that is somewhat wider along the same contour line. A "Bench" can also be a "Cut" as in fig. 10-25...like an old roadbed. Stinger-Hunter
try getting a google earth image. Sometime with Google Earth you can actually see deer paths. But even if you can't, it would be a good image to analyze
