1st kill for the boy............

Took my oldest boy out this afternoon for his first-ever squirrel hunt. We did the walk & sit, walk & sit deal. Didn't take him long to lower the boom on his first piece of game ever. Made a real nice 25 or 30 yard shot on this fellow.

We stayed out for about 2 1/2 hours and saw a bunch of squirrels and heard others we didn't see. By the time we walked out, the boy hadn't missed a shot (although he did have to give one tough guy a follow-up shot). All in all it was about the most fun we could have had in such a short time. Best thing is........there's waaaay more squirrels left in that piece of timber than what the boy toted out. So I imagine we'll be back there before too long. ;)

Cool!! You notice there are lots of squirrels this year? Atleast more than years past? They are all over the place up this way...

Yep. ;)

We only made a small circle in a small woodlot to get those 4. We saw another 6 or so that he didn't get shooting at. Plus we heard a few more that we didn't see. Seems to be a great year for squirrels. I better be careful though. Seems J-man (real name's Jordan) can be awful hard on them. :D He's got another 20 shells in that box. Could be some real hard times ahead for the tree rat population around the Strut10 Ranch.

Is that an H&R 20 guage? That was the first gun I bought...paid $42 for mine :)

Yep. ;)

It's an NWTF youth turkey model. He won that one at our local NWTF banquet. I had it kicked up a notch by having Rem-Choke threads cut in it so he could use tubes. He was actually using his Comp-N-Ckoke turkey tube on the squirrels. With an "end-of-the-nose" aim, it damages very little, if any, meat.

3 out of my 4 kids have that same gun. The 4th kid's only 19 months old. So I have another few months to get him his. :p

Now that is a great afternoon at the Strut Ranch. Your son will not forget that day ever. I am well into geezer status and can still relate the story of my dad taking me on my first ever hunt and it was for squirrels. I only got one but for many years could still take you right to the tree I shot it from. It finally blew down but I can still take you right to where it was and remember the shot with great clarity. Congratulations for taking the time to take your son hunting.
