WV Doe Down on Archery Opener (PICS)

Saturday Oct. 18th was the WV Archery opener. I was sitting in a treestand that I had hung earlier this year and hadn't ever hunted this particular part of the farm, but I was very optimistic. It was a cool morning, around 34 degrees when we left the house, and with no wind it seemed perfect. Trails were heavy around the edge of a field that my stand is watching, so I hoped to see some deer. I was ready to go and had just checked in with my Uncle over the 2-way radios and daylight was breaking. Shortly after daylight several turkeys showed up in the field, but a heavy fog rolled in and pushed them out. At 8:00 AM when the sun came out it began burning off the fog and I could make out the outline of a deer feeding in the field about 80 yards away, but coming my way.

Slowly she fed to an oak that I had already ranged at 30 yards. I had picked a shooting lane and right before stepping into it, I drew and she froze....we've all been there and the deer almost always wins this staredown. After what seemed like 10 minutes she stepped forward and lowered her guard to continue feeding on the acorns. I was able to steady myself and release the arrow. It smacked in at the ribs and angled through the vitals. The 100 Grain Muzzy blasted through and exited in front of the front left shoulder. She ran 50 yards and I could see her crash down in the bottom in a creek bed.

I sat for a while longer trying to calm down, and finally climbed down, got my arrow out of the ground, and claimed my trophy.

She's an average sized doe, and I was sure proud to tag her. I took her w/ my PSE and Muzzy 100 Grain MX3's (that I won earlier in the summer from one of the auctions here on Realtree Forums).

Congrats.

What part of WV are you in? I hunt just north Of Belington. Dad is gonna be heading down on Wednesday morning for some time in the stand down there. Me not making it this year. Got the our first baby due in 4 weeks, so no WV for this future daddy this year.

I hunt mostly in Monroe County, WV...good luck to your dad though, hope he bags a good mountain buck. And congrats on the little one on the way, WV can wait.

I like your camo btw.

Thanks, I really like this camo for several reasons. It sure worked well this spring in gobbler season, and so far this fall it's been pretty good. I do get a lot of mixed reviews about it though.

But for me? It's excellent, it's also lightweight (Doesn't look it!) so in the warm temperatures it's good.
