H&R Topper model 88 12ga.

Anyone have any experience with this gun? I have one for a few years now. It originally belonged to my uncle (moms brother). My dad bought it for him when he was old enough to start hunting. A few years ago my uncle decided that I should have it, so he gave it to me. I have only shot it a few times. But I have been thinking about it lately and I think it is a shame it is just there not being used. It is in darn near perfect condition, really clean also. I also wanted to know about drilling and tapping to mount a scope on it. Can this be done to this gun?

Ahh SHOOT!! I decided to give it a good cleaning. Turns out it isn't in as good of shape as I thought. At least the inside of the barrel isn't. Has a bunch of grooves that run about halfway up, they look like a bunch of cracks. I don't think they even sell barrels for these anymore. My dad has a Topper model 58, going tohave to get that out and cleaned up a bit to see what kind of condition it is in.:( This stinks. I was really looking forward to using it to. I have been looking at the Ultra Light Slug Hunters though, and the seem to be reasonably priced, this may have to be my next purchase. :D:cool:

Don't give up on that old 88 just yet! Try a brush/solvent combination while turning it with a cordless drill. Or wrap a bore mop with the fine (green I think) scothbrite. The lines you see are probably from the older drop shot (soft shot) combined with power piston streaks possibly. Bet anything they will clean right out to a mirror finish. As for scope mts., I don't think anyone makes any for a single shot like that, not that I have seen anyway. Would require drilling/tapping into the chamber area. Had one of those yrs. ago=tough little gun.

Yep, think I m losng my mind. Apparently the barrel decided to fix itself. J/K, the whole time I thought the barrel was shot, it must have just being moisture in it from the cleaning solution I used. I took it out today and it looked flawless, ran some more cleaning patches throught it and it looked like it did last night, then I ran a ton of dry patches down it and it turned out fine. I ran dry patches down it last night but apparently not enough. I'm happy now :D:D
