cflhunter
We're scheduled to hunt in southern Illinois, Marion County, November 3rd - 7th. Is anyone familiar with hunting this region? Hopefully this is a great time to be in the woods! Attached are the two pieces of property that we have access to. Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated! Good luck everyone.Ryan
layin on the smackdown
I've hunted there before..i have a relative who lives in marion co, who has a 40 acre plot just north of Odin. There are some bruisers around that county. i don't know where exactly you are going, but as long as you don't booger stands, find some major travel routes, and put the time in, you very well could get an opportunity at a serious giant. Its a great time to be out, i'm headed to Coles county from 11/4 - 11/14...lookin for another wall hanger! Good Luck!
HOYTnMUZZYboy
If the season is in there is never a bad time to be in the stand in Illinois That should be a pretty good time to be in the timber. Saw a few small bucks pushing does around today at about 730am. Not chase'n yet just starting to do that thing they do this time of year. We will have a few weeks or so of the pushing around and what not, then that magical time of year will be here. I'm more excited for the rut then xmas lol!!! With those maps, find the bottlenecks, and any fences that might be in there. Good luck and hunt safe!

layin on the smackdown
On the map of the ground just east of odin rd, way back in the northeast corner of the cut bean field looks to be a funnel or bottle neck or pinch point, whatever you want to call it, but i am willing to bet that corner has a lot of activity, and i would check that area out first! I haven't seen any chasin or pushin yet, but i have found several fresh scrapes and rubs...i put a cam on the fresh scrap friday eve and by sunday morn i had 5 different bucks check it out, and one was a giant! its right around the corner! AceArcher
I hunt in johnson county some. Good deer down there. Have been hunting in Southwest Il since season opener. Saturday saw 2 bucks fighting on way to stand and then a monster another 1/2 mile down the road. All within 1000 yards of my stands. Too bad it was 5:30 and still dark. New moon is on the 28th and things should start to heat up around then.
cflhunter
When you say don't "booger" stands I'm assuming you mean we need to be stealthy when hanging 'em? Should we definitely wait until mid-day for doing this? We're used to hunting Florida deer and I'm sure whitetails from the midwest are a whole new ball game! layin on the smackdown
I guess the word booger has multiple meanings... Basically what i meant was don't hunt those stands if there is a chance at all you could get winded. When it comes to hangin stands, middle of the day usually works, but that time of year, you want to be in the stand in the middle of the day up here...I would hang em at the first chance you get, whether its the first morning you get there, or the first night you get there...you may bust some does out, but your not huntin does, plus any damage you might do by hangin em in the morning or evening won't compare to what you might miss by not being on stand during teh middle of the day. you gotta take a small hit, but its worth it...the sooner you get the stand up, the longer you have to hunt. Good luck, hope you get yourself a bruiser!!! Also, after your hunts are over in the evening, go to the local bow shop in Odin, they have the techno hunt game which is a blast, and guys will usually stop in with whatever they got that night to show it off and talk about what they saw. Last year on nov. 3rd, a guy brought in a 13 point buck that still had all its velvet...WOW!!!
cflhunter
Thanks for the reply! We'll definitely check that out! Speaking of wind direction. The wind here in Florida is notorious for swirling throughout the hunt. Is there a primary wind direction in this part of Illinois?
Guest Primetime/IL
Marion county is just a few counties south of here, Ive got a friend that hunts down there and have joined him on a few. His brother actually had a run in with a 140 class buck down there about a week ago, but just couldnt get a shot. Theres alot of timber down there with some great bucks, as is any county in Illinois. As for the wind around here...it tends to shift alot, but you want to focus on which way it mainly comes from. You have to be very carefully when hunting bottoms because the wind swirls Best advice...would be find the thickest areas, and pinch points thats where your highest percentage chance of taking a nice one comes from. layin on the smackdown
the predominant wind during this time of year is usually west/ northwest...for some reason, we have had a lot of east winds in north/northwestern IL so far this year, and it is making me very angry:eek: But i would plan on a west to northwest wind. GOOD LUCK!!! couldve drilled a 135 inch 8 pointer last night, again, but he is only 3 1/2 and needs one more year...thats the 3rd time i could have shot at him in the last week...i hope he gets dumber with age...
