Finally got my mount back!

It's been a loooooooooooong year waiting for him!

He's the one on the right......(The one on the left is Todd's from Gun Season last year)

Oh, and I never realized until the taxidermist showed us, he has a mane! I never even knew deer could have them. I guess only like 1-2% of whitetails do...it's pretty neat! Anyone else harvest a deer with one or seen one before?

Some Pics of his mane(A little difficult to see with the other mount next to him, but it's still there!):

I'm sorry CSRoth and I don't mean to offend you or your kill in any way because it is a great deer but I have only seen that on capes where the taxi screws up on the neck and can't fix it or if the mount is really old mount and is starting to split up the back. I am not a professional so I may be wrong and again mean you no disgrace, but I dont think that he/she didn't do the best job:(

Congrats on the kill though.:D

What the heck ! You would without a doubt have seen that when you killed it. Anyhow that usually occurs when it is not sewed up properly. I have never seen anything like that in my life. That just dont look right IMO. However it is a really nice deer you shot.

Here is the link to a doe on cam who is still alive with a mane:

http://www.ohiosportsman.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16939

I was so jazzed by my shot that day that I was oblivious all day and didn't calm down much until after he was at the taxidermist, not to mention that he was a bit wet.

And also, a link to the original article in North American Whitetail:

http://www.northamericanwhitetail.com/deeroftheday/dd_march_2006/index4.html

And from that article:

Actually it's not that unusual at all to see a whitetail with a mane," says Dr. James Kroll, North American Whitetail's resident biologist and whitetail expert. "It occurs in many parts of the country. I annually see hundreds of deer and find that about 1 to 2 percent have manes. Presumably this is is a genetic throwback to the whitetail's ancestors. Although the historic record remains unclear as to the exact ancestors of whitetails, the tropical forest dwelling creature that preceded the whitetail could easily have had a mane. However, since hair does not preserve well, we will likely never know."

Even if the taxidermist had done a horrible job, that doesn't explain how a nearly two-inch mane of a completely different color would just show up on the capes back?

I'm like ccwhitey, I think your taxi might have screwed up. The explanation for a different color would be he used a different cape to cover up that he cut the cape too small. Like ccwhitey, and a couple others, not trying to knock the deer, your taxi, or you, because that is an AWESOME buck and congrats to you... just my two cents...;)

You guys really had me wondering, so last night I took the mount down off the wall and we really looked at it. Pulled the fur to the side to see the stitching, etc.

It appears to be a geniune mane. The only stitching is to the right of the "mane", and there is none on the left or directly under the mane itself.

I can't say my taxi is the best one out there, and I'm sure he does make mistakes, this though, seems like a geniune mane and not a taxi goof-up.

The pictures very clearly show that it's a natural mane, not a poor sewing job. Some of you should do a little reasearch before telling someone they got ripped off.

Was not telling someone they got ripped off. Just an idea and reasoning behind it. If it is a true mane, that is really unique and cool that your deer has it CSRoth!

Again, congrats to you on a great buck!!:);)

I do appreciate you bringing to my attention that there was a possiblity of a taxi mistake, I had never thought of it...and it did make me wonder and of course, I HAD to check it out, LOL....

Thank you for the compliment on the buck, he was my first and I'm extremely proud of him (though Todd now says I'm spoiled, LOL)

Congrats again CSRoth on the great buck and what has turned out to be an unique one at that;)

I have a buck that has the same looking thing on the back of his neck, mine is not as large as your but its not a mane, it the sew line and the taxidermist showed it to me, most all mounts have a bit of a line but that look like it follow the Y cut on the back and not a true mane, but show us some more photos so we can tell better, MAN THAT IS A HECK OF A DEER
