bowhuntnsmycrack
i know i am not a pro staffer or a professional hunter but its just kinda weird on how far scentcontrol goes because my father and all his friends have shot over 100 deer with this techneique. THEY LIGHT A CIGGERETTE on stand it seems like the deer walk right into it no matter what way the wind direction is. when i was about 10 when my dad shot a deer he had a ciggerette in his lips puffing away and the deer was down wind as and not phased by the smell. it makes me wonder is all this scent control stuff and being 100 percent scent free a hox
Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
thats all fine and dandy if you are a smoker I guess. Have at it. but for those of us who charish our health wer're probably not going out of our way to buy a pack of smokes because some say it draws in deer . Besides, I think the deer around here are trying to quit. :D
dbHunterNY
I'm not a prostaffer either, but I know since I've used scent control clothing I've been busted less with deer clearly picking up their heads to smell and bust me. I think it's just a matter of it helps and gives you an added edge. Not imperative that you have it, but it helps. - Dan
RangerClay
No Joke! A few years back my home state of New York funded (with my tax dollars) a study on deer eating cigarette butts along the road (then getting addicted) and if that was leading to more car deer accidents. Texan_Til_I_Die
No Joke! A few years back my home state of New York funded (with my tax dollars) a study on deer eating cigarette butts along the road (then getting addicted) and if that was leading to more car deer accidents.Well I've heard it all now! BTW - What was the conclusion of the study? Do you have a bunch of nicotine addicted deer?
dbHunterNY
HAHA Never heard about that. That'd be weird though.

Jeramie
To a degree I agree with you. I think we can go over the top a little. However, it will improve your hunt. The more you put into it the more you get out.
bowhuntnsmycrack
no im not saying theres nicotine addicted deer nor am i saying smoking garuntee's deer. i chew tobacco GRIZZLEY WINTERGREEN but what im stating is whats the deal with all this scent lok stuff and scent blocker. considering like i said my dad has gone ut in the woods plain right stinky smoking a cigerette and has shot numerous deer with a ciggerete in his lips and all the deer were down wind that he has shot. so how does the scent protective clothing give you an edge if people stink and shoot more deer then the guys who try not to stink
Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
Smoke is one thing, deer have smelled it and are used to it. Camp fires, homes with wood burning fire places....all natural recurring types of smoke. Human scent on the other hand, deer aren't used to it and one big whiff of it and they are gone. Thats were these suits come in, and the cover scents etc... They would be kind of pointless for a smoker to wear, since the smoke will clog up the carbon in no time and would over ride the scent eliminator or cover scent. It's not the fact that scents and suits are gimmicks, its the fact that human scent and smoke are different scents, one the deer is used to, and one a deer isn't. If smoking a cigarette covers up his human scent, then he can have at it. But for those of us who don't smoke and don't have the privilege() of smelling like it 24/7 we use things to cover up our natural smell, like soaps and cover scents. layin on the smackdown
I had a buddy in college who use to rip on my to no end about how anal i was about my scent blocker clothing and all my deer hunting gear staying in a sealed plastic bag in side of a plastic sealed tub...while he would smoke in his stand...The only time he ever killed deer was during shotgun season...Enough said... Guest Jim and Lynne Frady
What I have found is that hygene is a must for the woods. I use Wildlife Scent Killer products for bathing, shampooing and for my clothing. No matter what state I have hunted, it is very effective. You can't always play the wind. I was in Colorado a few weeks ago and had two huge bears three feet from me, they never knew I was in the woods. I am a firm believer in being as scent free as possible, it does work. If you bowhunt and want to get close to game use it. Any edge is a good one.
LifeNRA
THEY LIGHT A CIGGERETTE on stand it seems like the deer walk right into it no matter what way the wind direction is. Yeah, but they didn't tell you that they dipped it in a bottle of Tink's #69 first! LOL!!! :D:D Just kidding!

JakeN
i smoke. but from the time i get out of the shower, untill i get undressed and everything is in their scent proof bags im a nonsmoker. yeah i get a little "itchy" in the stand but its worth it. i see more deer more often. i smoked in the stand until this year.and yes ive noticed a difference. ive yet to go out and not see deer. haha knock on wood. i use all Dead Down Wind products and scentlok. My father still smokes in the stand. and yes he sees deer also. to me i feel like im doing the woods and game a favor by not leaving my scent all over. i feel as if im a better hunter/outdoorsman for doing all i can. buckee
I've never seen cigarette smoke alert deer, but humane body odor is a big NO-NO. The Indians used to smoke their cloths all the time before they went hunting, to cover up their body odor. JMO
Tink
If a deer can smell smoke he can also detect human scent American Indian used to not eat meat a week before abig hunt and didn't sleep with their wives either they used to have steam baths called "Sweat lodges " where they would go and sweat out the human smell and would appoint themselves with herbs and plants before a major hunt. When they came out and washed the sweat off they were clean as an Indian could be I doubt you would ever see an Indian smoking. either except for peace pipes. They were on to something when the fasting and didn't eat meat . There is tons of information on how to be a better deer hunter and scent control is but one tool a wise hunter uses. I dodubt this mans mindset will chance any time soon T.
birdhunter39
let me ask this , i hunt at state parks where people are walking the trails almost everyday , wouldn't the deer get use to human sent after a while ??( i hunt well away from any walking trails . ) . also can a deer determine human sent to the sent of a 4 legged predator sent ?? I went to a state park awhile a go to get camping info. and found out that the park offered a deer reduction hunt , so i talked to the DNR. person about it , and he said that there is so much human activity that the vast majority of animals weren't even afraid of humans . so if a person did stink i don't think that the deer would care over there anyways . just my opinion .
