Guest Mark_85
How long should a kidney shot deer lay before searching for it ? How long is it okay to leave a deer lay ? The reason I ask is I shot a doe farther back then what I liked and I believe it was in the kidney. When she ran off she was trotting. and she kept snorting the whole time. that kinda confused me. so I guess well see what happens.
bigbuckkilla89
depending on the temp if its low enough u can leave a deer lay at least 12 hours at least. If it was a kidney shot I would say wait about 6 to 8 hours be for going to trail her.
ThethirdI
I'm gonna have to say 6-8 as well, but there's no real way to tell. Deer are different just like people. Some are just tougher to kill. If the temp is low enough like it is today then you could let it go until tomorrow morning if you had too. Illinois59
I have to agree. At least 6 hours. Let us know the outcome. Good luck.
GWSmith
Liver - Wait an hour before attempting to trail. The animal will probably run a short distance, usually no more than a quarter mile, before lying down for good. There will be a blood trail, but it won't be that strong due to the high amount of internal bleeding. Stomach or Gut - Wait anywhere from four to ten hours before trailing. If it feels pressure from being tailed, the buck will go farther away before lying down, so lay back for most of the day, or even overnight. The blood trail will be very scarce and mixed with stomach or intestinal matter.

GWSmith
there's no blood trail at all that i seen of . was some white on the arrow ? Probably Fat...sticky to the touch. Was it a pass through? In any case without any sign you can see it sounds like you'll have to walk the grid! Walk the yellow line out in increasing increments. Red dot and arrow is the deers last known direction:
Guest Mark_85
no wasn't a pass through it broke off about 4" of my arrow. I thought I got her in the spine but she never fell once.

Turkeygirl
Hmmm sounds like you eitherh it her really high or really low....she might be ok as it sounds from your arrow having fat on it and how she reacted.........
hyperflow
I personaly have never shot a deer that snorted after i hit them nor heard anybudy that happend to. But i have seen/heard wierder 2 weeks ago my mom shot a doe a bit back and it hit the kidneys and the doe only went maybe 60-70 yards and crashed. I wanted to leave her over night because the arrow was just brown . But she was sure she heard her crash so we went after it and sure enough she did. Tominator
Sounds like a low hit to me, or maybe that fat pocket around the kidney. If there's fat on the arrow, and a high hit, there isn't going to be much blood I'm afraid. Search the grid like Gary suggested.

In any case without any sign you can see it sounds like you'll have to walk the grid! Walk the yellow line out in increasing increments. Red dot and arrow is the deers last known direction: ditto but allow each square to be more than 5 yards or you will only cover about 40 yards in front of you and 30 yards behind. just make a grid and follow it not missing anything and you should find your deer.
