Re: thin ice pics

[ QUOTE ]

I watched a show once, I don't remember the name of it, I think it was on PBS, but it showed how frozen lakes are commonly used as highways during the winter in this area, I think it was Alaska or somewhere in Canada.

Saw a similar or mabye the same show I think on discovery channel. Every so often truckers have to make trips across the ice to get supplies in somewhere up in Alaska I think it was.

Re: thin ice pics

Winter roads are common all over Northern Ontario, Manitoba, Sask, Alberta, and the territories. They haul huge loads on semi's since it is a lot cheaper than flying everything in. It is actually suprisingly safe unless they drive too fast(under ice wave forms and breaks the ice), or they go too late in the spring.

Re: thin ice pics

i use to work here for three years

http://ekati.bhpbilliton.com/default.asp web page grin.gifgrin.gif

Location

The EKATI Diamond Mine is located approximately 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife, 200 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle in the Northwest Territories, Canada, and 100 kilometres north of the treeline, in an area of continuous permafrost.

The EKATI claim block covers 344,000 hectares in the sub-arctic tundra, with the land lease area being 10,960 hectares.

Access to the EKATI Diamond Mine is by air only, except during a three-month period in winter, when a 400-kilometre ice road allows for the trucking of bulk supplies to the site.

The closest community is Wekweti, a Dogrib community approximately 180 kilometres southwest of the EKATI Diamond Mine , although not accessible by all-weather road.

coldest day i had to work was -108f with the wind the main water line was hit by a cat cleaning the road.
