MichiganHunter
Hello, I wanted this here cause I really wanted a Woman's answer. My mom is going to deer hunting for the first time this fall and she is going to need help since she has never hunted. She will be hunting with her brand new 870 20g slug gun. Now her in lies my question, as a guy I think I always know what's best....or at least that's what I'm told, but what helps women hunt and shoot better. 1. What is most important to a Lady hunter. 2. What can I do to make her comfortable shooting when I take her to sight in. 3. What shouldn't I do at the shooting range....other than yell. 4. How much dose learning by example..ie...show her first, help her. 5. Do you have any other suggestions to help me help her. Thank you Ladies Michigan Hunter Kris K. cinch314
1. To me is the scenery and the enjoyment of being outdoors in the middle of God's creation and being able to take a break from the everyday norm. 2. & 3. Be patient and try to teach her how and what you are doing., but most importantly be patient. 4. Let her know that a lot of people dont get a deer there first time out or even for a couple of years. It takes practice and the time that they are willing to devote to the sport. Let her know why we hunt and what hunting helps with so she will be better able to understand the necessity of the sport. Just my opinion. At least you are willing to help her and teach her. I never really had anyone teach me so I researched and learned stuff on my own. Oh and another thing. Tell her there are no dumb or stupid questions about hunting. The only dumb or stupid questions are the ones that are not asked. You learn by asking and doing so tell her not to be afraid to speak up.
Guest Jim and Lynne Frady
Glad to hear that you and your Mom will be hunting together this fall. There are a few suggestions that might help you and her both. As far as taking her to sight in, tell her to wear a sports bra, one that has not fastners on the front. This will keep her from getting bruised on the front of her shoulder. Some good hearing protection will also be needed. Be patient and yes showing her first is never a bad thing, this way she can see how much recoil the gun will have if any. Make sure she is in a chair that will bring her up to the correct place on the table for sighting in and that the rest is stable. It will take several shots for her to get use to the feel of the gun so take plenty of ammo and again if she misses a few times it's alright. Very few of us came here with a perfect shot record. You will find that she will be very patient with her shooting and that she will take her time squeezing the trigger, don't rush her. Women are excellent shots due to the fact we take our time and don't rush the shot. If this is her first time hunting make sure she has warm, water proof, wind proof clothing. That goes a long way on comfort. Yes, it's hard to find women's camo with all these features, I wear alot of men's clothing so I can get the featrues I want. Boots are most important, dont scrimp on footwear. Danner makes a great line of women's boots that fit properly. They need to be waterproof as well. Cold wet feet will ruin your hunt quick. Boots are a large expense but if taken care of properly they will last for many years. If it is cold where you hunt I would also suggest Thermacare Heat wraps. You can pick them up at any grocery store, drug store, and Wal-Mart and K-Mart both sell them. They were designed for muscle aches. But let me tell you they work great for hunting. Get the ones for your lower back, they come with a waist belt that the paks fit into. Also get the ones that stick to you that are for shoulders, tummy etc. Tell her to use the one for your lower back and stick one on her chest about a hands width below her throat. Put them on when you are ready to walk out the door. It takes them about 30 minutes to get warm. If she is stand or ground blind hunting these are ideal. It will give her 8 hours of comfort. Jim and I have used them for several years, if you keep your core warm the rest of you will stay warm as well. They really work! It's no fun sitting in a stand freezing. If you are warm you will stay longer and have the chance to harvest your deer. Hope this helps and give you some insight. Wish her good luck for us! You will make some awesome memories together for sure.
