kidd
How many of you shoot a doe this time of year? Here in Indiana things are starting to heat up. Should I whack a doe even if it is the chasing pre-rut stage? Kidd
WHISKEYSWAMP
I'd take a doe especially if she offered up too easy of a shot to pass up... now if there are bucks around, even small ones, I doubt I'd shoot.
Illinois59
I would take a doe if the shot presented itself. No question.
jdavis
I always try to take a doe or two early on in the season. I won't shoot one after mid october, this is when you want them around you. I don't want to spook all the deer of our land when I'm tracking or dragging out a doe. Guest mik629
I agree with Davis, I can't eat antlers so I shoot does in the first week or two, then I let the odd one past for a buck to follow.
BobRooney
Small Parcel? In Indiana most of the hunting land are small parcels and the number of deer that are frequently on said parcels are usually limited. So with that said I would hold off until post rut...the more does you have on your huntin land can only help drive the bucks wild come rut time. Tominator
I would take a doe if the shot presented itself. No question. Ditto. From a QDM standpoint I think it's a wise move.
wtnhunt
The deer herd has been on a bit of a downhill slide in this area with the states wonderful liberal limits and from a management standpoint taking does may not be so wise with knowing hunters on the surrounding farms hunt with the brown its down mentality. I am letting does walk here right now, however I have no problem with the wife or my daughter taking a mature doe. The doe my 12 year old killed last weekend was a little stinky, tarsals slightly brown not white. We did see a spike chase a doe that afternoon, and also watched the same spike chase another doe Sunday afternoon just before dark. So it is getting close to time for the mature bucks to start chasing, and if there are no does, they will have nothing to chase, nothing to breed and no fawns next spring. This time of year the does are teasing the bucks around here. Last year opening morning of our ml I called in a doe with a series of mature grunts and she had a 2.5 year old buck in tow, actually got that hunt on video and even after I shot the buck, the doe was still looking for me. So I prefer to wait and watch the does and see what unfolds.
toddyboman
I think my hunting ground has a surplus of does.....So I am attempting to shoot everyone I have a tag for....and since I can buy as many tags as I want I am trying to do just that..... However as the rut gets closer and closer I will become a bit more picky on shooting does........I am still going to shoot if the shot arises but I will be very cautions as how she is acting on if I shoot or not....
