Turkeygirl
On the Outdoor Channel yesterday...i think it was at 1pm, the show that the Kiskys and Lakoskys host. Anyway they show this guy, he does a stalk on a whitetail, 75 yard shot and shoots him in the neck:eek: I can see 50 yards on the ground but 75 yards...I think he got lucky on that shot. It just annoys me that because it's a big buck and what not, they'll show it on TV despite a rediculous shot, yet there are people out there, such as myself, who take the time to make good shots on deer that aren't giant. I wish these hunting shows weren't so focused on the big bucks and would focus more on what hunting really is and should be...any deer is a trophy taken by bow. Ok, I'm done ranting.... Guest Mark_85
I've seen the show. It was a long shot. But some people are this good with bows. Some are lucky. Im not sure about that guy. http://www.teamfitzgerald.com/FITZGERALD%20TV.htm Have you ever heard of the fitzgeralds ? They are instinctive shooters. I,ve seen a show with dan fitzgerald where he did a 75 yard shot on a caribou. Im not saying this is okay by any means you'd never see me take a shot that long with a bow ever unless I was messing around target practicing for fun. So don't jump on me like a spider monkey! thanks
Bowtech_archer07
Didn't see it either, but I've seen Lee LaKosky shoot an antelope that he ranged at close to 60 yards, and said that he would have shot a mulie that he ranged at 62 yards, but earlier thought that it was too far and then couldn't get a shot. Some people are that good with their bows. Again, not saying that that guy was, like you said, he probably did just get lucky. The farthest shot I would take it 40 yards, in the wild. I've messed around shooting out to 50 and 60 yards just target shooting, but would never shoot a wild animal that far.
Turkeygirl
Oh, I know there are some out there that are good, and I'm sure a few people on here practice and can shoot well at farther distances, so I'm not trying to bash anyone;-) I think I thought this program was better than that..I think I'm just getting tired of watching all these people who are one TV because they shoot big bucks...why not have a show where average deer are taken and the hunters are still pumped about it...don't when the last time was I saw a doe hunt on TV/DVD. Tink
Bad shot not shown on TV But when they gut shot a deer at 75 yards & loose it it never makes the screen right? But when it work they show it and set poor example for less mortal souls. The best thing I learned from the Fitzgeralds was how to cook on the engine of my truck. Really useful stuff like that. Dan Fitzgerald booked a 2 week bow safari with me when I lived in Africa for 2 hunters, , (no deposit we are such good buddies Tink), and never showed up, never called and never apologized. I was out a lot of $$ When I was living off fumes. No comment:mad:
Turkeygirl
Everyone makes mistakes I guess, but would would be nice would be more honesty maybe on these shows...rather than try and cover up the obvious....but afterall it is TV and it is a business to an extent for some. Chrud
Saw that episode a while back. I'm not going to rip on the guy for the shot he took, even if it was one I'd never take. Just because I wouldn't take a certain shot doesn't mean no one should. This will be a lot like the shot Stan Potts took on that 220" deer a few years ago. I typically won't judge someone's shot selection. Everyone has their own limits and abilities with their bow, muzzleloader, rifle, etc. If he felt like he could make that shot, that is his choice. He'll have to live with the results. I watched this topic blow up on two other forums, including Kisky's Forum. Can't wait to see what happens on here. Guest Finn
Just saw that show.....where he hit that buck proves it was luck and not skill. No one aims at a buck's neck at 75 yards.
Turkeygirl
I was sitting in my stand this morning, and tried to imagine how far 75 yards would be....I think my pin would block the deer out at that distance, lol.

These guys where supposed to show up at one of the local proshops but never did, and no one heard a word from them!. Its funny when I think about them all I think about is cooking and them baking on the engine block as well... Back on topic...as for the shot, 75 yds is a bit excessive... The speed of sound travels much faster and would get to the target before it even struck. It doesnt matter whos hands the bow is in... But..you cant blame them for going after Giants...and making it a high priority, thats what the shows about and thats why i love it..100% fair chase free roaming, and goes to show you what good QDMA can do... elkoholic
This is just another example of extremely poor shot selection and, in this case, a lucky ending for the shooter. Many times, even under ideal shot conditions, these supposed "pros" seem to have incredibly poor shot placement more times than not. Shooting a target on the range is not the same as shooting at a game animal. They can talk all they want to try to justify their choices, but in the end it still comes down to poor shot selection/placement. In other words, unethical. All in the name of killing a "giant". I have to agree that the videos they are producing offer a very slanted view of hunting. I also feel that the focus on "monster" bucks has gone a little to far. Here's another thought; commercial hunting is against the law and hunting for commercial gain via the making of videos must be dancing around that aspect. My thoughts for beginning hunters is to not be like the "pros".

AceArcher
I did not see that episode but if the arrow was in the neck then that wasn't where he was aiming. I would probalby take a 50+ yard shot if it were in the open, was standing still broadside and I was on the ground. I feel that is a much easier shot then a deer at 30 yards, moving thru the timber with me in a stand. There are a lot more variables in the latter...shot angle, elevation, finding a suitable shooting lane, trying to stop the deer and if he doesn't stop leading a little. These hunting shows probably due the best they can. People are gonna miss...thats just a fact. We don't want to but it happens. Many times if you make a less than perfect shot if you would just back out and wait till morning or a few hours the chance of finding that deer would go way up. You see that a lot on the hunting shows. It has gotten way over the top on the size of bucks. They must hunt some great ground b/c it seems like everytime out they see big bucks. What we forget is that they might have sat out there for 2 straight weeks b/f they filmed that buck being shot and saw nothing...those two weeks don't make it on the show. I know exactly what you're saying and I don't completely disagree. But no one would watch shows like that. Would you watch NASCAR if they drove 1998 Honda Civics around the track at 75 mph? A DVD cover with a 115" buck and 3 does on it wouldn't gather much attention.
