Guest Brutal
Howdy all. The wife and I are looking to get a new pup. Our last dog was a pure bred german shephard which was stolen from us about 2 years ago Now that our little girl is just about 1 we are deciding to get another dog for our family. We decided not to get one as big as a shephard and I told her that I got to pick it out because I plan on training one for hunting. My boy is 2.5 yrs old and soon as he can shoot a .22 I plan on taking him small game hunting and I am going to start bird hunting either next year or the year after. What is your guys favorite breed for a hunting dog (bird, rabbits, squirrels, all purpose)? Thanks in advance
wyohunter
i have a german shorthair pointer and i love him, he isnt a high stung dog, like most of this breed tend to be, we got lucky.... for a overall hunter, i would say a lab... great temperment, good with kids and usually pretty laid back
birdhunter39
we have 2 blk labs that are home trained for the most part, but they are trained for doves , pheasants and are being trained for waterfowl , they let just about everyone pet them , they love retrieving balls , sticks , dummies , and so on . I would have to say this it all depends what your hunting for . We have a ton of lab breeders within a 2 HR driving distance , our problem was choosing the right breeder . I would see what breeds are around you . we read up on each breeds and their pros and cons , and i've talked to family , friends and strangers about what breed they liked and why

GWSmith
I'm a little biased towards...Beagles;) I grew up hunting with them so when you said: "Small Game" it was the first dog on my list for that purpose...you simply cant beat thier nose for Bunnies or Birds:cool:
Tominator
I've had 2 hunting dogs, and been around many. If I were to ever get another dog, which I doubt, it would be a Brittany.

jm23494
You can't go wrong with a Lab. They are very affectionate and are great all around hunting dogs. Just remember that it takes a lot of time and patience to train a dog to be a good upland and/or waterfowl dog. Make sure you build on the basics and always stick to the commands. In the end its great to have a dog that loves to work the field and then comes home and cuddles up to you. Here is a picture of my little one Caruso (9 month old black Lab) when he was getting his new hunting vest fitted before our last hunt. Orion_70
That all depends on what you're hunting. For small game: rabbits you can't beat a beagle, squirrel it's a feist or a terrier ....
layin on the smackdown
I have had a few huntin dogs...but bar none, my lab is the best. he hunts can do it all! they are great with people, especially kids, and are extremely loyal! QDMAworks4me
I have to say that you will never be disappointed with a lab not only are they great hunting dogs but the two black labs that I have had are VERY loyal and great with kids. I see with having a few of your own that will also be very important to you. It will be very exciting for you to get the new dog I am sure, good luck with him or her and make sure to post pics
