backwoods07
That's pretty awesome, but can they really be cheaper than buying an already built one? Or is that not why you do it?
iowabucks
Hope you don't mind me answering this one Gus. You can build a homebrew with a Sony S40 for $150, easy. Maybe less. Cheaper is not why i do it. Picture quality and performance is why. If you have a problem with your homebrew there are a few good homebrew sites that can help you diagnose the problem and fix it. You don't need to send it in to get repaired. The thing i like about homebrews are the picture quality. You are using a regular digital camera to capture the image, not a mass produced CMOS sensor built cheap for the trailcam companies. I had a few commercial cams then built a homebrew. Long story short, i now have 7 homebrews and 1 IR videocamera setup. IR pictures don't trip my trigger so i stay with white flash. The picture quality is much better. Here is a couple pics to show you what i mean.
wtnhunt
Some nice setups there Tonya. Still have another p41/yeti build I need to get around to putting together here, but it will have to wait probably until winter after season ends. Gus
Nice answer and great pics iowabucks I really couldn't even begin to tell you how much a commercial game cam would even cost or which one would be the best to get. I can tell you that the reason I started building my own game cams is because the first commercial cam I got didn't make it thru the first rain storm still working. I sent the camera back to the makers several times and they always sent it back saying it was working for them. I never did get that camera to work again, so I started out building a few 35mm cams, still have all of them that I use every so often and they all still work like they are suppose to. After a few years of the 35mm cams, I made my first digital cam and have never had a problem with any of them either. I have put together 8 digital game cams including these last two and 4 of them I made for myself that I use on my place year round.
backwoods07
Thanks for the answers. I figured they would cost more for plenty of reasons, but apparently I was wrong. I would really love to look into making one. I can imagine it would make every picture you grab even more special, especially if you have some monsters like iowabucks. You weren't kidding about picture quality. We just spent $150 on a cam about 3 weeks ago and I can assure you that it doesn't rival what you have. Thanks again guys! arrow32
Nice work. Think you could get some instructions posted up on here on how to make them? I know I've saw them around here before somewhere. We are thinking about buying a couple more cams but that might be a better idea.

Flintlock1776
You may want to start building those without the camera. Just ask us what camera we use and build a custom box for us!
