Turkeygirl
that just totally creep and gross me out! For instance I had a patient this week with c-diff and had diarrhea all in the bed....of course I dealt with it, but I think I'm scarred for life....was worse than the nursing home first year:rolleyes:. It was baaadddd But even worse than that, I think, I come home ,eat dinner, come down to do a little homework on the computer, I'm holding my cat and I feel something under his collar. I thought it was a bur till I really look, it's a tick! EEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!:eek::eek::o:o So I go upstairs tell mom and my sis, my sis has the vet tech degree, they take the tick off but I had mom hold my cat, I was too creeped out by the tick. Leeches are something else that also creep me out.....ticks and leaches = Ok, back to homework...

c_lou
Give me ticks and leeches over poopy sheets. There isn't enough money could be given to me that would make me want to be a nurse. Nurses are some of the most special people on Earth.
Leo
Nastiest job I ever had was when I was working in Hospital Food Services. They made me do the dishes one day... These were the dishes returned from meals after the patients had "finished" their meals. Let's just say some (I lost count) patients ate all their food and sent it all back on the tray anyway (big surprise, that's what sick people do) I told them I would walk out the door never to return if they ever asked me to do that one again (they didn't). Nasty, nasty, nasty... After that experience, it's real real hard to gross me out.
BuckNrut
So long as you change those sheets BEFORE sending them to Radiology... I'll still be your friend. BNR
Loomis1228
There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY I could deal with some stranger's bowel movements, vomit, urine or any other "movement" for that matter. I have a hard enough time dealing with my 2 year old daughter's dirty diapers. I have to breathe with my mouth open! I also couldn't cut people's hair for a living. I cannot imagine some greasy man coming in to get his hair cut that hasn't washed it in a couple of days. NO WAY.

Just wait till you start working with bedsores, tracheostomies, gangrenous feet, vomit, blood, inserting foley catheters in 500# women that haven't had a bath in a year:eek:.......oops, i've gone too far. I'll just shut up before I cause you to want to quit nursing school. The job comes with pro's and con's. Most of the time the pro's outweigh the con's....stick with it girl. It will be worth it in the long run.
too_pointer
Ruth, are you sure your in the right profession ? You gonna have to face that everyday while working, and it sure seems to bother you now, what about the future ? There seems to only be a small % who are cut out to to handle that, and can't forget the poor patients who have to live through that. I'm sure you will do great whatever you do, but it sure seems to bother you now, hope it gets better. too_
Shaun_300
I certainly could never be a nurse or doctor. Being blacker than the ace of spades from fingertips to elbows in grease doesn't bother me a bit, but blood and that sorta stuff. Get it away!!! LOL...spend alot of time as a motivational speaker do ya:D I'm still a registered Home Health Aide here in New York...but thats as far as I could go and I have not done that kind of work for a couple years now. I saw enough, cleaned enough, held my breath enough...for a lifetime:p I do know one thing Ruth...I married my Wife who's been a nurse for going on 36 years now. She's the most special person I've ever met. Her caring heart for people is beyond my capacity to understand. She has been there for so many people as a hospice nurse. The most tender moments I ever saw as an adult I witnessed when her own father was in the process of dying. The entire family was there suffering and my Wife served everyone with her knowledge and compassion while going through the event with her own feelings to deal with. Live the life you want...Nurses do that...they are special Angels on loan from above that touch the living here on earth.
OJR
After 38 operations and seeing a whole lot of patience in the hospitals, I have nothing but total respect for nurses and nurses aides! If I am in the hospital, I will try my best to keep a positive attitude and not create problems for the nursing staff! Sometimes, you can't do that! Sorry to say! You people in that profession have my utmost respect and I have been in the hospital a lot! 13 months in one stretch!
Turkeygirl
I'm surprised you would think I'm not cut out for it but yes, I am where I belong, what God wants me to do. I don't let these gross things affect how I care for these people, I was just venting it was gross, I know I'll have to deal with it all the time, it was just one of those times I needed to share. I feel more sorry for the patients than myself, that's why I love helping these people because the other nurses sure don't give them the care they deserve, at least where I'm doing clinical anyway. Ruth, It is everywhere. There is a big trend in people getting into nursing because they see dollar signs. Nurses make good money and there is always job availability. But it is real sad to see that the patients suffer because of it. I love my job and could not imagine doing anything different. Over the years my stomach has gotten alot stronger. Most things don't bother me. I was just picking at you. You are going to be a great nurse because you are doing it for the right reasons and your heart is in it. If you ever have any questions please feel free to pm me.
Turkeygirl
I didn't say you were picking at me,lol. I totally agree though, there's too many out there just because it's a guaranteed paying job, even our instructor told us that. My mom said tonight that with the economy, health care professions are one thing that probably will not be affected.
DocMort
So heres a reply from the medic side of things. If I had to go anywehre in the hospital as a nurse it would be the ER, most times it stabilize yes 500lb men and women without baths are nasty but it happens. Perhaps the nastiest thing and by that I mean most grotesque never really had anything bother me. Is the guy who blew the top of his head off and lost all function but breathing and beating. Lets just say messy day. Mind you this is coming from a Combat Medic that has deployed once or twice.
