Spoiled meat?

I shot a 140 class 11 pointer the othernight at about 5:00 p.m. and let him lay through the night. I recovered him around 8:00 a.m. the following day. I loaded him with ice and butchered him the same night of recovery. The temp was 48 degrees for a low the night I shot him. The meat didn't smell bad, but I was curious on what opinions there are about the time frame for meat spoilage. Thanks

I think you are fine with the meat. We tried to salvage a doe a few years ago and it was a big mistake. We knew the minute we found her that she had turned. It is a smell that you cant forget. I assumed that it was because she had been gut shot.

Well, after all 4 of us had handled her the next day we were all very sick. We never did eat any of the meat but we assumed that the bacteria had made us sick.

I can tell you this, if i ever find another deer that smells like she did i will not even touch it.

I'll send you my adress, please send the back straps and fish to me and I'll personally test them for you. I feel you may be in danger of food poisoning and would be willing to put my life on the line for you. I will roll them in cracker crumbs, and pan fry them up for breakfast with eggs and bacon. I will consume the meat in question, then I will send you a full report stating if the meat is edable or not.

I know it's super of me to do this, but I couldn't live with myself if I let you take this risk on your own.
