I worked my tail off spotting for a month and getting permission which was really interesting, It was about 60 miles from my house and there is 100 cow and 25 bull tags this year, I managed to get a cow tag!I had a herd of 60 pinned ot a cut oat field butting up to posted land were a cow was shot last year, so no permission granted, they were coming out of the posted and into the field 100 yards off the fence and about 500 from the road, feeding to sunrize and back in the bush, I managed to get permission to the stuff to the north, the plan was to park in the north pasture and if wind right get on the fenceline before daylight, the night before is when it broke loose, I was spotting with 3 other vehicles who were planning the same field,we decided to work together to cover all escape roughts, which was fine, a vehicle stopped to ask if the elk were out yet and we said no, he drove in the field and around the fingers of white popler were they bedded the idiot, I knew it was going to be fun week!!No respect at all, he knew we were watching and to do that what a idiot!!next morning up at 330, got ready and packed and was down to meet the other guys by 530, hunting started at 730 and I wanted to be in by 645 or so, we got to the north pasture and walked the mile or so in at about 7 we started to see light all over vehicles were driving in the field to get tot he fence, I counted 8 sets of lights, I then heard a bugle 50 yards to my left and cows mewing and the fence screeching as the jumped it, I could see shadows but not really the animlas, as it lightened the field was full of so called lazy slob hunters!!!I got together with the buddies right at daylight and we decided to push one small bush back to the truck, we came around a bend and 15 cows were standing at 326 yards, I was sure they were on posted land but when I got to the truck I found the fence is in the draw and they were 100 yards on the north huntable pasture, the rest of the day was spent posting and pushing bush, there was a couple older guys so me and a buddy pushed every draw, I had 3 close chances at big bulls including a 360-370 class 6by6 at 45 yards, but not a cow, the 2 guys bull hunting had chances at 15 cows, thats the way it goes, by dark all we knew was we put on close to 20 miles . I ate about 20 halloween chocolates to keep awake the long drive home, next am was spent sitting on the hill I seen the 15 cows that am, heard a rally of shots but seen nothing, I met up with the guys at 10 and we decided to pusha draw they seen a bunch of elk head towards at daylight, I pushed for a few miles one draw and then sat waiting for them to push another finger towards me, I heard someone holler bull, then cow and calf, the bull ran out to my right at 100 yards, I was waiting for the cow, then boom, the buddy drops the bull, I looked to my right and the cow and calf comes out but farther than I hoped, they stop and I range at 439, I knew the gun was good and I shot at 400 earlier that weekend practicing, I set the crosshairs of the 300 on top of shoulder and let fly, she buckled and was down with a heart shot!!I let out a holler and ran down a hill were only mountain goats go, whne I got up I could not believe her size, wardens figure she was 5 1/2 years old, she dressed at close to 400 pounds, I was so exited I forgot to get someone ot get pics of me with her on the ground till after I gutted her, it was a mess but you can see how much room she fills in the truck!!I have shot a lot of huge bucks and spent alot of time on them but never worked so hard to get a animal as this, This is my proudest animal ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks guys, used my buddies 300 mag, I was not able to get brass or good loaded bullets for my 7mm in time so borowed his 300 reloaded with berger bullets, took shots out to 400 sunday so knew it was right on, 100 2 inches high, 200 pretty well dead on 300 5 inches low and 400 was 14 inches low,it dropped about 18 inches on the shot I took, I knew the gun was shooting good and knew for sure it was a dead elk before I shot, if I was worried it was not there is no way I would of took the shot, when you have shooting sticks that are good its amazing at how steady you are, I never leave the truck without them, mine are set up so I can sit and use one knee as a third point to rest on, as steady as a bench!!
