BLH
Hi guys. Have a quick question: What choke should be used for smooth bore slugs? I have a 12 ga. 870 that will be used for close range hunting in a shotgun-only refuge and really need the info on this. Thanks for any help. - Brandon
stcif
I believe improved cylinder is best. I am assuming you are referring to just standard foster style shotgun slugs. I used to shoot Winchester slugs out of my smooth bore 870 and they worked just fine.
lil hunter
i've always heard that you should use an improved cylinder choke also.
BLH
Thanks for the input guys. I used the improved today with the remington rifled slugs and they did just fine taking down a 300 lb black bear.
LETMGROW
Congrats on the bear! I have found slug diameters vary widely among brands. While the usual recommendation is Improved Cylinder, don't be afraid to experiment a little to find which choke works best for you.

I know several years ago the differences were dramatic, that is why I used to shoot the Winchesters as they were the biggest diameter. I think Remington and Federal are now similar to the Winchesters in diameter. The Federal Tru Ball is supposed to be a very accurate new slug that will work well in different barrels. There are so many choices now. Any pics of the bear?
BLH
I didn't have a camera with me. However one of my friends had his and took a few pics...I will post them as soon as he emails them to me. Should be in the next day or two.
