Ok, I'm starting to look at some rifles and like others, I'm taking thoughts, opinions, and suggestions. What caliber would you buy an AR in? The .223 is readily available, lots of ammo around, but I love the .308 caliber.. Little more versatile, better range, ballistics.. What's everyone got and if they were buying another one, what would you get and why? Pros/cons

Think it depends on the intended use. I bought my varmint rifle primarily for coyote hunting and also for target practice. Since I already have the .223, I am wanting to get .308 while I can. Don't know that I am going to find what I want though, kind had my mind set on the rock river standard A4 but apparently they are not making them right now. The comparable dpms does not have as good a trigger, and not sure what type of accuracy the gun gives. the rra guarantees 1 inch @ 100 yards. Looking at possibly getting a dpms stripped lower .308 and going from there, but dont know yet have to make some phone calls tomorrow.

The .223 I have is a rock river varmint model, very accurate rifle and I have been very happy with it. Have used it for target practice and have killed about a half a dozen yotes with it in the little over a year that I have had the gun.

If I had one to choose for versatilty I would probably lean towards the .308, but ammo for the .223 is a bit cheaper. Good luck finding what you are looking for.

After shooting handgunnrs DPMS .308...and with our new Pres. elect...I've decided to purchase a "black gun" as well.

I can't hunt with it here in PA...so it would be just a fun gun and to have while I still can.

I was leaning towards the DPMS in .308 like gunnr's...but then I seen the AR 30 in a .300 win mag. Not sure what I want now...but I will say...gunnr's DPMS, shooting 10 rounds at a fair pace (not rapid fire) but fast enough to get on target...I hit 9 outta 10 rounds at 300 yards. Don't know what kind of groupings I got...was really only tring to hit the steel plate (about 12" wide by 15" tall).

I wouldn't hesitate to buy the DPMS in .308...the .223 would be cheaper to shoot, but given the choice...I'd opt. for the .308!
