I have a 7mm Mauser rifle that is around 30 years old and still has the original finish. I have decided to tear it down this winter and refinish the stock and reblue the barrel. muggs Posted November 10, 2008 Report Share Posted November 10, 2008 I've actually done this with my shotgun and it turned out great. I wasn't able to blue the barrel/metal parts of the gun but I was able to refinish it with a product called "gun kote." The company that puts it out is Brownells. Just google that and you should be able to find it. You spray it on and then put the barrel etc... into your oven and it bakes the product on. It sounds crazy, but it actually comes out really nice as long as you take your time doing it. You have to really strip the metal though, so I just found a place near me that offered "glass bead blasting" which is just like sand blasting but with the glass beads you don't get the sandy residue. So find a place that does that (should be around $10-$20) and have all the metal bead blasted. Then use the gun kote (comes in various finishes) and bake it on. As far as the wood goes, it's just like fine sanding anything. Start with a heavy grit paper to take off the original finish and then go to 120 and finish it off with 240 grit. Stain and finish. I would recommend keeping both the metal finish and the wood finish consisted though. I went with a satin finish for both. Mine turned out really nice. As far as refinishing a stock goes don't try and use combo stains that contain polyurethane. Absolutely do use a pre-stain conditioner the wood will accept the stain much better if you do. I would definitely have someone who's experienced do it. And you don't have them blast the trigger assembly or anthing like that but it didn't affect my shotgun at all.
