RangerClay
You have heard enough about the harness. I'm telling you right now that you are dam lucky that the screw in step didn't gut you. Get rid of those things and get a ladder or some some strap on steps. I'm glad that you are alive but this was definate wake up call from God. As the ad says below.....
Leo
Falling from just 3ft up and landing the wrong way is enough to break bones. Say a prayer of thanks today because you're really blessed right now. Your jacket snagging on the way down probably slowed your fall considerably. Glad you're ok. Things could be much much worse. Buckeyenut
Dude, A buddy of mine fell from 15 feet last week- he has a broken back, multiple broken ribs, broken wrist, and multiple contusions and lacerations. May never hunt again- we just don't know yet. You, my friend, are very lucky, as you already know. Now, do yourself(and us) a favor, and go and buy a Fall Guy restraint system and use it every time you go up and down the tree. It is really a sweet system that stays in the tree. It retracts up and down as you climb or move, but catches if you "jerk" it or fall- just like a seat belt mechanism. To calm everyone's nerves around here, I suggest attaching a copy of the store receipt on this thread when you go out and buy one today!! wtnhunt
Glad you were not more seriously hurt. A fall from 15 feet could have been a lot worse. Sounds like a wake up call to use a safety system that allows you to stay attached while climbing.
LifeNRA
15 ft and all you got is a bruise/cut harm and a ripped coat? You're lucky to be alive! Maybe you should take a tree stand safety test? Like Chris said, your lucky to be alive! Good thing you didn't kill yourself! Now think about it the next time instead of your mother fixing your coat, she might be picking out your funeral clothing! Spend the money and get some kind of harness! ;)
Illinois59
We use a safety rope ( available at Cabelas or Bass pro ) and tie it above the stand and at the base of the tree. Then attach your safety lanyard using a prussic knot and you are always connected from the base to the top. Safety first, then hunt.
crazylegz70
Just some advice from a kid to A Kid....I recently met a man on a hunt that was paralyzed from the waste down....You can imagine, lots of things running through my head. "Car Wreck?" "Fell off of a Roof?" However I have never got the shock of my life when he told me that he fell out of a treestand and thats what paralyzed him. Needless to say, I am greatfull to this man because of him, I will NEVER get in a treestand without my harness again. I always said it was uncomfortable, a pain in the rear, or just difficult to put on. But if you think that harness is a pain, imagine trying to wheel yourself in a wheelchair down to where your stand is and put up a blind....NUFF SAID.... I am wayyyyyy glad you are ok......lucky young man..

hort
We use a safety rope ( available at Cabelas or Bass pro ) and tie it above the stand and at the base of the tree. Then attach your safety lanyard using a prussic knot and you are always connected from the base to the top. Safety first, then hunt. I use the same setup as above on all my stands. Most falls are not from the actual stand but stepping onto or off the stand or climbing the tree/ladder. Your life is worth the extra effort and any expense!!!! Flintlock1776
Hunter Safety System????? Please be careful out there. Agreed! In addition to the HSS vest I use all their accessories, the tree stand life line line is great with fixed stands: http://www.huntersafetysystem.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=

sskybnd
im glad you werent hurt, and take it from some one that knows what a fall can do to you, i fell out of my stand in 04 and no i wasnt wearing my safty harness either, felt like you no need to put it on till i was up in the stand, well i made it to the stand at 20 ft and before i could but it on, the bottom went one way and the top went the other, i fell out hitting the ground and breaking my wrist in 2 places and 3 ribs, now i have a plate and a hand full of scews holding it toghther, you dont know how lucky you were to get out of that with out realy getting hurt.now i have what gwsmith showed you that i use to get into the stand and a safty vest i hook up to when i get into the stand, one fall from a stand with out getting killed should be a wake up call, never hunt with out one...
