Nice Blacktail

It was Monday, Nov. 10th. The rut hasn't really kicked into gear yet, but the bucks are primed and ready for that first doe to smell just right.

My buddy Ken, had gotten down to the farm early, but I had to drop Diana off at work just before 8:00am. I was going down late, but I figured late was better than not at all.

I picked up a coffee at Tim Hortons, and a Sausage & egg Breakfast sandwich. I munched down the sandwich on the way to the farm, and as I pulled into the driveway, I had only a couple of bites left.

As I pulled around the last bend in the driveway, I munched down the last bit of sandwich and looked up to see a really nice big mature 2x3 standing by the old oil tank just next to the ravine. As I slowed to a stop he walked over the bank (so I thought) and down into the ravine.

I turned off the engine, got out, and proceeded to get my bow from the back of my truck, and get my trigger and armguard on. I thought that maybe, just maybe, I could get a shot off if he was still down in the ravine.

It took me a few minutes, and there were some larg trees right beside the truck, that was blocking my view. I stepped out from behind the trees to sneak over to the ravine to take a peek, and low and behold, there he is, standing there, broadside, above the ravine, at 30 yrds.

I knew I didn't have time to range him, and thought he was anywhere from 30 to 35yrds. I put the 30 yrd pin on him and raised it to 35 yrds, which put the 30 yrd pin high on his lungs, and squeezed off the shot.

THWACK-WHACK was what I heard, and the deer just stood there for a second. I thought I'd missed ans hit the tree behind him. He walked to the left about 5 yrds, stopped, turned around and walked back to where he was standing, then continued walking to the right, another 8 to 10 yrds. He was so calm, I thought for sure I had missed, and just stood there dumbfounded at how I must have misjudged the distance. At around 10 yrds from where He was standing when I made the shot, he put his nose in the air, and toppled over.

WOWZERS...I was in awe of his calmness, with sucjh a fatal shot, and the very short distance he had traveled before falling over. He never moved once he hit the ground.

I had to call my wife on the cell phone to share the good news, and she couldn't believe it...LOL I had just dropped her off at work, not 10 minutes before. A perfect high double lung

You can see the buck laying where he dropped, not 10 yrds from the tree he was standing in front off, on the bank.

Not only did he not go down into the ravine to start with, but he also didn't run down there after being hit, which would have made a difficult retrieval for me. And, to top off my good fortune, my arrow was ever so slightly, conveniently sticking in the only tree that was growing on the ravine bank, that he just happened to be standing in front of when I shot.

What a blessing of a shot.

I tried taking some field photos, but I didn't know I screwed them up until I got home.

So when I got home, I got Ken to take a few more. Please excuse the long-johns...EH ...LOL

That's a real dandy Vancouver Blacktail! I know they get bigger but that's a darn nice one. A seriously good deer. Congrats!

Tim Horton Breakfast? Bet you got some coffee too. Not much more Canadian than that!

I had a deer take 5 steps after I shot him with a Montec G5 and fall over just like that. If they are really sharp I don't think the animal feels them unless they lodge in solid bone.

I suppose with only an 11 yard rope tied around his neck he couldn't really go much further from the tree he was tied to...:D:D:D J/K

WTG Steve! Awesome blacktail! Congrats! :)

Dang...:D I didn't think the rope was that visible :D:p

Congrats on the black tail! Look at that boxy forehead too!

I sold the cape to the Taxidermist, and he was impressed with that boxy head, and short snout too. ;):)

This guy weighed 100 lbs even, hanging at the Butchers, and that is a good deer. My old 5x5 a few years back, was 115 at the butcher, and the biggest blacktail I've shot, ... so I'm happy :D:) Now it's doe time for me.
