JJL
I don't know what got into me recently. Maybe it was the full moon, maybe it was the rut. But for some reason known only to God, I decided to quit chewing Skoal...........Long Cut Straight to be exact. I've had Skoal in my mouth for 30 years.............24/7/365 for 30 years. I've always been able to keep it to the side and swallow everything, so very few every knew it was even there. School pics...it was there. Prom pics...it was there. Wedding Pics......yep..it was there. It's just that no one could tell, so I couldn't care less. Last week I had a little incident enter my life and I decided that if I could handle that..........I could quit chewing Skoal............I'm an IDIOT. Skoal is bigger than me, tougher than me, and better than me................but I'm going to kick it's butt anyways................just for self-punishment. 24/7/365......................30 years. I woke up Friday and had my last dip. Spit it out around 10 am. Been clean ever since. YEE-HAA...................Wish me well, this could get bad. I don't really know what could cause a person to give up something that they enjoy..... Luckily I have a BIG jar of Valium in my Med. Cabinet that I've been saving for just such an occasion. Now excuse me while I go and Kick My Dog for no good reason.

You can do it though, sounds like you've got the right mindset for it. Good luck and keep us informed.

I applaud you for even trying Jim ,, I for one know that the words lose or quit aren't in you, so I know you have this habit beat ... Just don't know if your family and pets are safe tho .. Good Luck my friend and I will be saying a prayer or two for you and especially the family and neighbors ..

ruttinbuc
If a person puts his mind to it and really wants to quit anything, he can! I quit drinking which I thought was the hardest thing I ever had to do back in 1988. 12 years after I quit smoking cigarettes cold turkey. I was up to 2 1/2 - 3 packs a day. Coughing and gagging woke me one night. Thinking I was about to spit out a lung I took a half pack of boro's and tossed them. The weeks that followed were the hardest I ever had to deal with. I was one miserable, ornery and disagreeable person you would want to meet. Today I still feel the effect of smoking for some 35 years, but I know I am that much better for not lighting up anymore. Go easy on the dog and the kids, Jim....if anyone can beat the habit, you can. Just keep telling yourself that and Skoal will become a distant memory... Sunflower seeds are another disgusting habit....They should be sold with a perch and a water dish....

JJL
Sunflower seeds are another disgusting habit....They should be sold with a perch and a water dish.... That's the exact same way as I feel Mike. Good God, there's no reason to quit a habit and start a new one. Especially one that is just as bad as the first. I mean, I can chew Skoal in Church................try that with Sunflower Seeds.

JJL
UPDATE......................... We're 66 hours into this thing. I'm sleeping about 1-2 hours per night. Sweating then shivering............sweating then shivering.........kind of reminds me of elk camp. No one to take the chill away.............. Yesterday morning I had to get out of the truck and let my wife drive. Blurred vision, zero ability to concentrate, shaking............no point in getting in an accident. My hair won't stop growing or my head won't stop itching whatever it may be is driving me nuts. Folks this is real DETOX.................I need a rubber room and a new white jacket with the sleeves that tie in the back. We'll get through it..............there's no point in feeling like the Lone Ranger on this one. It's just really hard. By the end of the week I figure I'll have officially kicked nicotine's butt and be ready for my new addiction............................halibut fishing. Thanks to God, Mother Teresa, and the 1980 U.S. mens water polo team, We're going to get through it. My advice to all of you with severe addictions..................NOBODY LIKES A QUITTER !! Ohiobucks
Who was it, Bill Engval I think, that said, "I quit smoking cigarettes by starting cigars, quit cigars by smoking a pipe, quit the pipe by smoking crack, so I'm pretty much tobacco free now......" Good luck Jim, just think of the money your saving in not buying Skoal, put it all aside and watch it start piling up.
pendog
PRAY alot, that is the only thing that got me through. I was able to overcome (with God's help) my 10 year addiction to Copenhagen and have not touched a pinch in 3 years! YOU CAN DO IT! Pray alot,
