Another Indiana gun deer

Boy it's been a while since we've had weather that miserable for opening day of gun season. Cold rain, 10 mph winds gusting occasionally. That morning I sat down in the woods about 100 yards from one of my plots, in the same tree that I shot the big 8 pointer last year. I saw one doe scoot through the brush shortly before 8:00. I sat until 11:00 and that was all I saw.

I sat there thinking that the weather conditions were great for deer to come out to feed early, so I decided to sit in a stand I have in a treeline seperating two plots....a clover plot and a brassica plot. I climbed into that stand at 1:30 and sat with the wind in my face. I'd occasionally scan the clover plot in front of me, then glance over my left shoulder at the brassica plot.

At 4:00, I glanced at the brassica plot to find a deer in the middle of it. My mind registered "Deer! Buck!! BIG BUCK!!!" He was cruising for does and wasn't hanging around to feed, so I hurriedly took a shot while he trotted for the woods. Thanks to the beautiful weather my scope was fogged, and my shot was way less than perfect. I hit him way back. he went down into the woods about 80 yards from me and bedded down. I knew I had put a terrible shot on him but didn't have an opening to him to finish him off. I nervously waited for 5 minutes, only to watch him get up and walk away from me. After weighing my options, I knew I had to give him plenty of time because of the poor shot, but didn't want to give him too long because of the rain, the quickly approaching darkness, and the fact that he walked away towards someone else's property.

After waiting 45 minutes, I climbed down and backed out. The wind was blowing from me to where he had headed, so I decided to circle way around and sneak in from downwind of where he headed. I was able to move along quietly with the wind and rain, and spent over 30 minutes sneaking about 100 yards down the hill. When I got to the bottom, I came to two huge blown down trees that were blown over in a large wind storm a couple of months ago. They were covering the old 4 wheeler trail I was on, so I stood there trying to decide how to get around them. About that time, the buck jumped up from the top of one of the blowdowns, 15 yards from me. It all happened pretty quick, but at 5:30, I was finally able to finish what I started and put him down for good.

I can say this....that was one 90 minute stretch spent in deep prayer, and it was answered. God is good.
