SIWhitetailHunter
Here are some pictures my cousin forwarded me from his dad's farm that he stumbled across today. The one deer was already dead at the time it took place, and the DNR told the landowner (my cousin) to get a hold of a bow hunter. My cousin muzzleloader hunts. So he called the first person he could think of with a tag, (IF ONLY I WAS HOME AND NOT AT SCHOOL LOL...) So this is the outcome of two bruisers fighting. A salvaged tag was issued for the already deceased buck. Here is only a few pictures. If you'd like more respond and I'll try to post some more when I have time. muzzy916
its sad when you see that, but here in indiana dnr would give you tags for both of them. i just hate to see two big deer die like that but it is a pretty cool thing to witness i guess. good luck

fly
Thanks for posting the pics. It makes me wonder????? If the DNR encouraged a bow hunter to take one, I suppose he would have had to use a buck tag to shoot it? Sure it would make a nice mount and all, but where's the sport? I'm not sure if I would have used my hard to come by buck tag on it. I don't think P&Y or B&C would alllow it into the books as fair chase? I wonder if someone could have used a chain saw or something to cut off the antlers? I saw a hunting show once where some guys used a chain saw to seperate two bull elk. No one got hurt and the bulls both survived.
tp793
Thats a shame. Both were really nice bucks with some junk. Hate to see that happen.

SIWhitetailHunter
Yeah the person who shot the deer I haven't talked to, but I don't think he was really excited. It's what the DNR told them to do shoot the live one if he wanted to and tag it with his buck bow tag. I've also seen where someone uses an high power and shoots the antlers though that would be hard. Personally I think a tranquilizer should have been used seeing as though the one deer was dead already. Shot the live one with it...Separate the deer and let the alive one live. Dispose of the other deer, issue the salvage tag to the landowner and chase after the other big boy later on down the road.

arrow32
Now that is a shame. Those are two good looking bucks. I got to say tho I wouldn't be to happy about shooting one like that to be quite honest but I would to keep him from suffering any longer. wtail
I was wondering why both deer look like they both have holes in them like they were both shot.I thought 1 was dead already. It sucks to see 2 awsome deer go like this ,it is to bad dnr couldn't come out and cut them apart, they sure would make for and awsome mount. hoosierhunter
more than likely though that one live buck probably would have been so distressed that he more than likely would have died not long after. Usually that's what happens when they get tangled up like that. He might run off, but more times than not they don't make it b/c of the stress of the situation......... Tominator
Sad to see that. Always seems it happens to big bucks too. Little guys don't have the mass to get locked up I guess.

whttlbucksteve
Did they remain locked it looks like the one came free after.
SIWhitetailHunter
They remained locked. As for the dead one with the wound I'm guessing thats from the early stages of the fight. The two deer are getting mounted together from what I've heard from my cousin and the kid who shot the deer. The deer that's alive is probably going to be pushing into the 180's Non-Typical maybe better...I saw a picture from the taxidermist and the deer looks way bigger than he does on these photos, but really...Better him than me I guess, the only way I'd feel like I hunting a big buck and won would be if they came under my stand I was at full draw on one and then shot. Zambo
Great photos, thanks for posting. It is a shame to happen to two great bucks, but this happens in the deer woods every year. Some are found and some just die with no one ever knowing. The coyotes have to eat too. It's life in the wild, never easy, sometimes shocking, always for survival.
