Re: what do people think about a 7mm Rem. Mag.

I had a problem with a 7mm Mag. on an elk a few years ago. I shot it about 200 yards out, hit a rib going in and it was quartering away from me. The bullet went into the off shoulder and blew up! I lost the whole front quarter. mad.gif

I was using a 160 grain Nosler Partition.

Sure didn't make me very happy! I sold the gun and have been using a 270, 308 and 30-06 ever since and have not had any problem with bullets blowing up or ruining a lot of meat!

I don't have any problem with any of these calibers on deer or elk! smile.gif

Re: what do people think about a 7mm Rem. Mag.

The 7mm Rem Mag is marginally higher performing than the 30-06. It does burn more powder and generate more recoil and muzzle blast through. Notice I did not say its a better round, because its not really. In actual performance, the .270, .280, 7mm Rem Mag, .308, and .30-06 are all very close. IMO, the .280 Rem is a better choice. It will come very close to the 7mm Rem Mag's numbers and kicks a lot less. This is first hand experience. I do have a 7mm Rem Mag in my safe. Its just another big game cartridge that falls right next to a lot of other ones.

If by a good varmint round, you mean it will kill varmints, then I guess all rifle rounds are good varmint rounds. The Magnums are way too big for varmints. Barrel over heating is a big problem, recoil, and ammo cost makes them a poor choice for varmint hunting. Another knock against them for varmint hunting, is the lack of good varmint bullets. Varmint bullets frag easily as to not riccochet, or extremely limit the riccochet. Big bullets do not frag and will travel a long ways after bouncing off a rock or hard dirt.

Re: what do people think about a 7mm Rem. Mag.

Honestly have never shot a 7mm mag, so cannot say from experience, but the ballistics and what I have read about them they are a great caliber for large game. Do not think I would use a 7 mm for a varmint rifle. I shoot a .270 for deer here and it is all the rifle I could ever need for deer. Really think my next rifle purchase will be a 30-06, versatility.

Re: what do people think about a 7mm Rem. Mag.

If you want my honest opinion it is one of the more overrated cartridges. Sure, it will kill alot of animals, but so wont an 06 wil less recoil and a bigger bullet. My buddy has one and we have had to track every deer he shot with it. He went to a .280 Rem and has dropped every deer since. If it is working for you great! It would just not be my first choice.

Re: what do people think about a 7mm Rem. Mag.

It's a very popular round. I'll give it that.

I just always considered it to be a poor choice. If you're going to burn all that powder and take that recoil...........buy a .300 Mag and have a genuine "big gun". If you want a flat shooting deer rifle...........then buy a .270 or .280 or 30-06 and save the noise, recoil and ammo $$.

i think it is a very accurate caliber. but i still love my 300 wsm. but to each his own. i am sure there are people out there who hate the short mag. the important thing is what do you think of it. smirk.gif

Re: what do people think about a 7mm Rem. Mag.

the 7mm rem. Mag. is a great varmit all it really is a 30.06 necked down to a .284 magnum. it is also a good big game round too. and it dose not kick that bad and in fact my 12ga. has more recoil then that.

if u want to really feel some ting that kicks, step up a mm to a 8mm mauser with 47 grains of duepont 30-31 with a 170gr. spira point with a mag primer now tel me with the recoil is comprable to. hahahahaha i know.(it is my grandpas handloads he know no there is some kick and loud)

but in all in all it is a uliterian rifle. and if u want to drop ur deer aim 1inch below the spine and behind the front shoulder and u will drop him in his tracks and u wont have to track him out its called the sweet spot. and that gos the same with an elk or caraboiu or moose

Re: what do people think about a 7mm Rem. Mag.

yea these guys are good mine is a savage Remington, Winchester, Ruger, Savage or Weatherby but go with what ever feels good to u im not going to tell u what to get but will suggest the savage because the accurecy if extremly awsome and they do not kick ****** hard as they say they do. yes they are loud i give u that mine does not kick as hard as people make it sound yes it gave me punishment when i first shot it but i shot 40+ rounds through it in about 4 hrs taking my time and the first round that i spent was place 1 inch above the bullseye at 100yds im set up at 300+yds for my rifle. i put 2 bullets in the same whole when i shot my first two shells. but like i said go with feels comfertable to you and if they (as my grandpa says if they sing to you it will allow you to shoot it and hit what your aiming at) sing to u thats the gun for you.i suggest go into pawn shops and look around for several different calibers and dont just limit your self to just one caliber. but they are all good guns and <warning they are kind of spendy for a box of shells, they range any where from $16.00-$24.00 abox> and i suggest look more at an 30.06 and guns like that

i gave you all i can say about it go with what FEELS GOOD TO YOU! NOBODY ELSE!

Re: what do people think about a 7mm Rem. Mag.

Recoil is a subjective thing. What feels heavy to one person may be extremely heavy and uncomfortable to a new rifle shooter. It can be light to a person that has been seasoned by the shooting big magnums for a long time. For someone to get their first rifle, it is not suggested they start with a magnum, period. Start with something that kicks a lot less and work on building shooting form. Thats hard to do when they are afraid of the recoil.

Re: what do people think about a 7mm Rem. Mag.

i agree aj but here is the thing, whats the sence with being afraid o the recoil. it will also make the shooter have respect for guns and teach them how to shoot that particular rifle handgun or sotgun, etc. One gun may fit the shooter and that very same gun wont be able to fit the next shooter its all based on what feel comfertable to the shooter when he/she goes and pics out their first gun, agreed? no two guns are alike. soo it does not kick as bad as people make it sound, imo. it does not kick as bad as a 30.06 or 300 mag or a 270 ect. it felt like a 30.06 to me and it has its own recoil i understand that but u have to look at it from this point of view too. if people would think about it the 7mm rem mag is the same as a .284 and it basicly is a 30.06 necked down to a .28 caliber thats all a 270 is think about it. and i am not saying this to be a jerk cause im not all im doing is trying to get people understand theese things. it only hurts if u think about it

JimT the only things a big bullet is for is penittration and yes an 06 will kill the same but can their slugs go way down to a 79 grain slug? the 7mm rem mag can. thats why its one of the best out there.

I am very strongly thinking of purchasing one and that would be my first rifle. What brand do you think you are going to go with? Tikka, Remington, Winchester, Ruger, Savage or Weatherby

[/ QUOTE ]

1. Tikka

2. Remington

3. Savage

None of the other ones!

Go with the 30-06 or the 270! You will be happy you did instead of the 7mm!!

[/ QUOTE ]

Wrong! If that was the case, the best method would be to start with a big gun like a .340 Weatherby or 338 RUM. They have a lot of recoil and would teach how to shoot. Then the shooter can drop down to a better suited deer gun and not feel the recoil?? Start low in recoil to introduce a new shooter. Keep it fun for them. If you start something getting beat up all the time, you won't stick with it.

[ QUOTE ]

...it does not kick as bad as a 30.06 or 300 mag or a 270 ect.

[/ QUOTE ]

The 7mm Rem Mag has a bit more recoil than the .30-06 and .270 Win. in a gun that weigs the same. Do the math, more powder = more recoil.

[ QUOTE ]

if people would think about it the 7mm rem mag is the same as a .284 and it basicly is a 30.06 necked down to a .28 caliber thats all a 270 is think about it.

[/ QUOTE ]

While you are correct about the bullet diameter of a 7mm being .284", a 7mm Rem Mag is not the 30-06 necked down to .284. That is a .280 Remington. A 7mm Rem Mag is a belted case that is the same length as a 30-06, but is bigger in diameter. This allows it to hold more powder. Now the .284 Winchester, 7-08 Remington, and .280 Remington are very good choices for most hunting.

I believe you. You just have some opinions mixed in with facts.

Wow, me too.

I guess scope cuts do not exist unless you think about them. What a concept! crazy.gif

Its not that I dislike the 7mm Rem Mag, as I said, I have one in my safe. I don't believe it is a good first gun. With all the choices on the market today, there are better chamberings out there.

To a point this is true. Will a 170gr Core Lokt bullet from a 30/30 penetrate more than a 150gr bullet from an 06. No.

Re: what do people think about a 7mm Rem. Mag.

Isnt there a factory 30-06 load called an accelerator that uses like a 55 grain bullet. Seems if I remember the ballistics tables correctly the velocity on that round was well over 4000 fps. with a very minimal amount of drop at 300 yards. Could possibly be a varmint round? Not exactly sure how heavy loads go for the 30-06, but no question there are plenty of varieties of factory loads available in the 30-06, most likely more so than any other cartridge. No doubt there are heavy enough loads available in 30-06 for every big game species on this continent.

Re: what do people think about a 7mm Rem. Mag.

As for penetration, once it has exited the other side, who cares? Again, its is has more to do with bullet selection rather than chambering.

Yep, the 30-06 is factory laoded with a .224" 55 grain bullet in a nylon sabot. In a 24" barrel it exits just over 4000 fps (factory says 4080 fps). It is for use on varmints only. But it is not very accurate. I ahve shot them in many different guns and got patterns instead of groups.

Good point AJ. Also proper expansion should be looked at here. You'll get better results from a load designed for a specific animal rather than just throwing a huge hunk of lead at them. (Btw, I learned that from you AJ wink.gif)

Does this have anything to do with the projectiles size in reference to the barrel? Im a novice (at best) at ballistics but it seems the more room between the wall and the projectile, the more room for uneven gas pressures? Fill me in......

I don't know if its that so much as sabots have been used for many many years and can be super accurate. The problem with sabots is you now have two times as many settings to give bad groups. If the full bore diameter bullets have excessive runout (they are not running down the centerline of the cartridge), the bullet starts out with a lot of yaw. As the bullet spins this creates a circle that the nose of the bullet makes which is bigger than the bullet diameter. This is akin to throwing a football. When you don't release it correctly, the ball wobbles in flight. Thats what a bullet with excesive yaw does. Back to my point, the bullet can be seated slightly off axis in the sabot and the sabot can be seated off axis in the cartridge neck. This can compound errors and cause some nasty sized groups. Hope this is understandable.
