As if things weren't tight enough in the money department, the rear end in my Chevy has decided to go BOOOOOM !!

It was making some whining noises, so I had it looked at a few days back and knew it was going to need replacing, but I was hoping it would last for at least one more week and then I wouldn't have to look for other transportation back and forth to and from work .. That plan is now up in smoke .. :(:(

$600-$700 to have the rear end changed out ,, and now it looks like rental fee's for transportation for 2 weeks is going to be accrued .. :o Tammy and I didn't need this right now,, money is super tight... Looks like it's bye-bye Christmas ... :(

Sorry for the rant ,, I needed to vent abit. If you have a prayer or two in ya,, would you be so kind to send one our way .. ;)

Ugh! Sounds like a pinion bearing was on it's way out then grenaded. Would have went through and wrecked everything in there. :( Do you know if it ruined the housing Luke? Do you have to replace the whole rear axle assembly or just rebuild the gearset and components inside? Just confused why it's going to take 2 weeks to fix it, It's only about 4-5 hours to rebuild a rear diff and probably about the same or less to swap out a whole rear axle assembly. Unless there's a hold up on parts...

Is the the whole rear end, or just the gears? We had the spool snap on the gears on the mod at a special this year. While it acted like it was a major mechanical failure, it was only a matter of changing the gears, a little clean up and a couple hours later it was ready to go.

Great advice from Shaun. There is no reason, except for a parts delay, that this couldn't be a one day fix.

I hope things get better for you soon.

The whole rear end needs to be replaced .. The hold up is my mechanic is going on vacation next week ( he's going to South Carolina to visit his daughter for Thanksgiving) and the rear end won't be available until early week after next .. ;)

The Ring and Pinion exlpoded and took out alot of other things as well .. :(:(

Luke, You know your Family is in our prayers here;)

You know my vehicle woes as of late...so I can comiserate with you brother:(

The best laid plans...have a mechanic chomping at the wrench to take them down...(sorry Shaun):D

If it's any help the Wife shared some of her uncommon-common sense again this morning as I went out the door to work a "Double" today:

"Honey..at least the truck did'nt catch on fire while you were on the way to go hunt in West Virginia".

I thought about that all day long...and in the end...she's absolutely right. Things could have been much worse.

The thought of you or your wife being in an accident when the rear-end blew out could have changed your life permanently.

I'm glad Tammi and You are OK;)

prayers said, luke. really sorry to hear the bad news. can you maybe do cheaper at a junk yard??? i'm a mechanical nothing and really don't know. very sorry for your problems.

That might work for a new housing Steve but junkyard gearsets can be iffy things.

The rental car back up vehicle really adds salt to the wound Luke. Anyway you can get by without needing the rental? Sounds like that's the only dough you can save right now :(

The complete rear end that will be installed in my truck will be coming from St. John's , Canada they have one of the largest junk yard gold mines available in the Northeast .. ;);)

The only components that were salvageable from my rear differential were the calipers and rotors ..:eek:

I'm told by a couple very reputable dealers that $475 is a great price, considering the price of a spanking new one .. with a labor rate of $40 pr/hr which is dirt cheap for a retired GM Certified Mechanic .. ;)

The time frame is whats the killer with the Thanksgiving Holiday,, my mechanic that I use is too reasonable and dependable on the labor rate to have some other mechanic do the work.

The rentals here are through the roof, they want $35 a day and I'm looking at 8 days of rental. I just can't swing that rate at this time. And so called family just can't seem to free up a vehicle for me to use, even with offers of payment ... :o:(:(

That's OK Tammy and I have delt with tougher times and made it through, this is just one more obstacle we'll kick down in our path through life .. ;);)

I thank you all for your prayers .. that will help, and I truly believe that .. :):)

Sorry Luke, if you lived closer I would let you use my GMC Jimmy. Glad you are at least getting what appears to be a great deal on getting it back on the road.

Just consider this a bump in the road and God will never let you down. You take the good with the bad and each day your able to wake up, is a good day! Sure beats the alternative.

Hang in there buddy! We are all sending prayers!
