Depends on whether or not I had a tag. ;)

Actually, I might not. I've extracted more than one deer from a barbed wire fence, although none were big bucks, and I never felt temped to try to shoot any of them. I would probably try to break the bucks apart first, before I resorted to shooting the one that was still alive.

BTW - I'm pretty sure it wouldn't qualify for B&C or P&Y because of the circumstances.

First and foremost, best situation is a tranquilizer gun to put the one down so that you may free the antlers if you are unable to get close to try and help them out.

If that doesn't work, or the DNR doesn't take the time to make something work, see what you can try, if you can't get close enough and still no help from the DNR put the one that's alive down otherwise he's going to suffer.

...What's a book buck?

Pope & Young...or...Boone & Crocket..."Record Book"

I'd first try to get them apart if there was a safe way to do that. Then if that was successful I'd actually let the buck get away. I would feel compelled to do that because of his physical state which would probably be completely exausted. IMHO there would be nothing but a hollowness to taking that deer in the state of exaustion after he was free.

If and when it happens I want it to be "Right"...and not like shooting a Marlin in a bucket.

IF I could not get them apart I'd put the buck down more out of compassion for the life then the taking of a trophy.

It would'nt be a trophy but a mercy killing.

I'd definitely not claim it as such or attempt to boast about the kill in any way. It would be because the inevitable starvation as the only reason.
